Klaus-Peter Justus (born July 1, 1951 in Königsee ) is a former German athlete . In the 1970s, he was the most successful 1500 meter runner in the GDR with a total of 10 national championships . His greatest success is winning the 1974 European Championships in Helsinki .

Career

Justus started for SC Motor Jena . At the GDR indoor championships in 1970 in East Berlin , he was third over 1500 m. In July of that year he won his first of a total of 10 GDR championship titles. His first victory at an international climax came in September at the European Junior Championships in Colombes near Paris .

In 1972 Justus dropped out of the semifinals at the Olympic Games in Munich . In 1973 he was third at the European Indoor Championships. At the European Championships in Rome in 1974 he won the gold medal over 1500 meters (3: 40.1 min). He ended his playing career in 1980 after not being nominated for the Moscow Olympics.

Until 2015 Justus worked as a sports teacher and trainer at the elite school of sports in Jena and was the regional trainer of the Triathlon Association of Thuringia. Since February 2015 he has been the U23 national trainer of the German Triathlon Union (DTU) and works in this role at the Olympic base in Rhineland-Palatinate / Saarland in Saarbrücken.

During his competition time, Justus was 1.73 m tall and weighed 51 kg. His son Steffen Justus (* 1982) was active as a triathlete and runner until 2017.
