Jakob Ingebrigtsen (born September 19, 2000 in Sandnes ) is a Norwegian medium and long distance runner .

Life

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was born as the fifth of a total of seven siblings in Sandnes, Norway, near Stavanger . He is the younger brother of Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen , who celebrated international successes as middle-distance runners themselves. Like his brothers, he is trained by his father Gjert Ingebrigtsen.

Athletic career

Ingebrigtsen's older brothers came into athletics by chance and were trained by their father Gjert, who had no previous experience as a trainer or athlete. Jakob Ingebrigtsen himself started running in childhood and showed talent at an early age. In 2011, at the age of 11, he completed a 5 km run in 17:19 minutes and was able to improve to 16:43 minutes the following year. In 2012, his performance was tested at the University of Stavanger due to his unusually good performance for his age , with a maximum oxygen uptake (VO 2 max) of 68 ml / kg / min. In the following years Ingebrigtsen was able to improve steadily and gained first experience in international competitions. From 2013 to 2016 he took part in the Världsungdomsspelen in Gothenburg , an international comparison competition that was particularly popular in the Scandinavian countries, and was able to achieve top placings and victories there against some older competitors. In February 2014 Ingebrigtsen increased the Norwegian indoor record over 1500 meters in his age group to 4: 05.29 min, his best time from 2015 was 3: 48.37 min in the B-race of the Stockholm Bauhaus Athletics . Thus he was able to qualify for the first time for the national title fights, in which he reached ninth place at the age of 14.

In 2016, he ran 1,500 meters in 3: 42.44 minutes in a national run at the Bislett Games in Oslo and qualified for both the U18 European Championships and the U20 World Championships . Since he was only allowed to start at one event due to a regulation, he only competed at the U20 World Championships in mid-July in Bydgoszcz, Poland , where he finally achieved ninth place in the final run over 1500 meters. A week later Ingebrigtsen won bronze at the Norwegian championships over 1500 meters. In December he took part as the youngest participant in the junior race of the European Cross Country Championships in Chia , Italy , and won this competition against the competition, some of which was three years older.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen 2017 in Kortrijk

At the Prefontaine Classic at the end of May 2017, Ingebrigtsen was the youngest runner of all time to date - 53 years earlier Jim Ryun completed the distance in 3: 59.0 min at the age of 17 - the mile with a time of 3: 58.07 min under 4 minutes . Three weeks later he was able to improve this time again at the Bislett Games (3: 56.29 min). On July 8th, Ingebrigtsen made his debut at the Guldensporenmeeting in Kortrijk, Belgium, in the 3000 meter obstacle course and with a time of 8: 26.81 minutes immediately stayed below the norm for the 2017 World Championships . Two weeks later he competed in the U20 European Championships in Grosseto, Italy, over 1500 meters, 5000 meters and in the 3000 meter obstacle course; including the respective preliminary runs, he completed 5 runs within four days. On July 22nd Ingebrigtsen finished eighth in the final run over 1500 meters after falling 300 meters from the finish. About two and a half hours later, however, he clearly won the 5,000-meter run, as well as the obstacle final the day after, with a lead of about three seconds each. At the World Championships in London, he retired 44 days before his 17th birthday in advance. At the end of August Ingebrigtsen competed again over several distances at the Norwegian championships in his hometown of Sandnes and was able to secure the titles over 1500 meters, 5000 meters and the 3000 meter obstacle course in addition to a bronze medal over 800 meters. In December he defended his junior title at the European Cross Country Championships in Šamorín, Slovakia .

After two Norwegian indoor championship titles over 1500 meters and 3000 meters in February 2018, Ingebrigtsen won his first race of the season in the open-air season over 1500 meters at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, USA , beating Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz and the Olympic champions over 5000 meters Paul Chelimo . A month later he increased his best time of 3: 39.06 min as third at the Bislett Games with 3: 36.06 min . Two weeks earlier he ran the mile in 4: 52.28 at the Prefontaine Classic min also best time. In July Ingebrigtsen started at the U20 World Championships over 1500 meters and 5000 meters. In the tactical 1500 meter final he won the silver medal behind George Manangoi , the younger brother of the world champion Elijah Manangoi , over 5000 meters he secured bronze behind the Kenyans with a time of 13: 20.78 minutes in a close final Edward Zakayo Pingua and Stanley Waithaka Mburu and before the Ethiopian Selemon Barega . A week later, Ingebrigtsen improved his best time over 1500 meters as fourth at the Diamond League meeting Herculis in Monaco by almost 5 seconds to 3: 31.18 minutes and, like his brother Filip Ingebrigtsen , undercut the same race with 3:30 .01 min Norwegian record was running, the previous family best time of the previous national record holder Henrik . He now held the European U20 records over four distances (1500 meters, mile, 5000 meters, 3000 meters obstacle). At the 2018 European Championships in Berlin , Ingebrigtsen won gold over the 1500 meters as well as the 5000 meters. Over the 5000 meters he also improved his own European U20 record with 13: 17.06 min. In December he became the first runner to win the junior title for the third time in a row at the European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg, the Netherlands . Together with Simen Halle Haugen, Håkon Stavik, Jonatan Andersen Vedvik and Simon Nebijo Steinshamn, he also won gold in the team competition.

In 2019 Ingebrigtsen started the indoor season in February with a 1,500 meter victory in 3: 36.21 minutes at the Nordenkampen international match . During this time he undercut both the Norwegian indoor record and the U20 indoor world record set by Belal Mansoor Ali . The World Athletics Federation IAAF did not recognize this performance as a world record, as no zero check of the timing system was carried out in accordance with the requirements of competition rule 260.14a. A week and a half later, however, he improved his best time at the PSD Bank Meeting in Düsseldorf to 3: 36.02 minutes and beat the Ethiopian Samuel Tefera , who had set the indoor world record four days earlier. At the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in 2019 , he won gold in the 3,000 meter run and silver in the 1,500 meters. His victory over the 3000 meter distance made him the youngest male European indoor champion in the history of competitions and was also the very first gold medal for Norway at the European Indoor Championships. At the end of March he finished twelfth on a difficult course in the U20 race at the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus .

After a cold, Ingebrigtsen entered the open-air season at the Diamond League in Stockholm on May 30th over 1500 meters and worked his way up to 3rd place in 3: 37.30 minutes after a defensive start on the final round. Two weeks later he finished 6th at the Bislett Games over the mile in 3: 53.04 min. At the end of June he finished fourth at the Prefontaine Classic over the same distance with a new personal best of 3: 51.30 min. In the two following weeks he ran first at the Athletissima in Lausanne as second place also over 1500 meters in 3: 30.16 min best time and then confirmed this performance at the Herculis in Monaco with second place (behind Timothy Cheruiyot ) in 3:30, 47 min. On July 20, Ingebrigtsen competed over 5000 meters in London , where he was just barely beaten by the Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet in 13: 02.03 min and undercut the 15-year-old Norwegian record of Marius Bakken (13: 06.39 min) .

In 2020 Ingebrigtsen started in the Bislett Games, which were held as Impossible Games because of the Covid-19 pandemic, in a long- distance duel between team “Ingebrigtsen” and team “Cheruiyot”, with the 2000-meter run being held in Oslo and Nairobi in parallel. Ingebrigtsen won in 4: 50.01 minutes and thus undercut the European record of 4: 51.39 minutes set by British Steve Cam from 1985. At the Diamond League meeting in Monaco on August 14, 2020, he undercut the 1500 meters in 3 : 28.68 min the European record set by Mo Farah in 2013 by 13 hundredths of a second.
