Venanzio Ortis

Venanzio Ortis (born January 29, 1955 in Paluzza , Province of Udine ) is a former Italian long-distance runner .

At the 1974 World Cross Country Championships in Monza, he won the silver medal in the junior race. In 1976 he retired at the Olympic Games in Montreal over 5000 meters in the run.

In 1978 he was eighth over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Milan . In the summer of that year he dominated the long-distance races at the European Championships in Prague . In the 10,000 meter run , he won the silver medal behind Martti Vainio from Finland in 27: 31.5 minutes. He won over 5000 meters in a sprint decision in 13: 28.5 minutes ahead of the Swiss Markus Ryffel gold.

Due to injury, he missed the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . At the Athletics World Cup in 1981 he was fourth over 10,000 meters.

Twice he was Italian champion over 10,000 meters (1976, 1978) and once each over 5000 meters (1977) and in cross country (1980). In 1978 he won the national title over 3000 meters indoors.

He was also successful in road races: in 1978 he won the Giro di Castelbuono and in 1981 the Giro al Sas .

Venanzio Ortis is 1.78 m tall, weighed 64 kg during his playing days and was trained by Franco Colle. In contrast to walking, there was no great tradition in long-distance running in Italy. In this respect, Ortis was a forerunner of the great generation of the 1980s with Salvatore Antibo , Gelindo Bordin , Alberto Cova and Francesco Panetta .
