Thomas Wessinghage (born February 22, 1952 in Hagen ) is a German doctor and former athlete . On August 27, 1980 in Koblenz he set the oldest still valid German record for men's Olympic running disciplines over 1500 meters (3: 31.58 min) and became European champion over 5000 meters in Athens in 1982 .
His career as a middle- and long-distance runner spanned over 20 years. In 1981 he was athlete of the year , in 1985 he received the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Prize . At times he was married to the middle-distance runner Ellen Wessinghage .
Life
Wessinghage completed his medical studies in 1977 with the state examination. From 1996 to 2002 he was medical director and chief physician of the Saarschleife rehabilitation clinic in Mettlach-Orscholz ; from 2002 he was medical director of the rehabilitation clinic Damp, since 2008 he is medical director and managing director of three clinics of Medical Park AG in Bad Wiessee . He took over the patronage of the 2nd Homeopathy Congress 2011 in Karlsruhe . In addition, he is a professor at the German University for Prevention and Health Management , of which he is Vice-Rector for University Development and Transfer, and is present in the media as an author and specialist on health topics.
According to the assessment of the Bavarian State Medical Association (BLÄK) in 2014, Wessinghage carried the title “Prof. Dr. med. ”wrongly, as he“ does not hold a professorship at a medical faculty ”.
He was nominated four times for the German Olympic team and took part in 62 international matches. This makes him the record international of the German Athletics Association . Because of a broken bone, the man from Hagen had to forego participating in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 . He won the title of German Champion 22 times . The European Championship over 5000 meters, which he won in 1982, was his greatest success. In 1979 he won the World Cup over 1500 meters in Montreal, 1975 the European Cup over 1500 meters in Nice, and 1983 over 5000 meters in London. He set German and European records, of which the German records over 1500 and 2000 meters (4: 52.20 min) still hold.
In his marathon debut in Berlin in 1989, Wessinghage ran 2:26 hours.
Thomas Wessinghage had a competition weight of 71 kg with a height of 1.82 m.

Thomas Wessinghage has been German champion 22 times , especially over the 1500 meters . However, he celebrated his greatest success over the 5000 meters . At the European Championships in Athens in 1982 , he won gold in this discipline. Wessinghage also competed at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal .
