Paul-Heinz Wellmann (born March 31, 1952 in Haiger ) is a former German athlete and Olympic bronze medalist over 1500 meters .

The first major international event in which Wellmann took part was the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki . Wellmann reached the final run and was seventh.

Wellmann also reached the final run at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . Again he finished seventh over 1500 meters. His future wife Ellen Wellmann (née Tittel) also took part in these games , who also reached seventh place in the final over 1500 meters.

After the European Championships in 1971 and the games in Munich, Wellmann again took seventh place over 1500 meters at the 1974 European Championships in Rome .

He achieved his greatest success at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . The native of Hesse won the bronze medal over the 1500 meters. He mastered the final run in 3: 39.3 minutes. For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf .

Paul Heinz Wellmann started for TV Haiger until 1974 , where he then became an honorary member. Then he started for the TuS 04 Leverkusen . His trainer was Gerd Osenberg .

He is 1.79 m tall and weighed 69 kg when he was active.

Wellmann continued to dedicate his life after active sport to athletics. Among other things, he was the trainer of Sonja Oberem . He is also active in the functionary sector. He is the spokesman for the competitive sports clubs of the German Athletics Association and was managing director of the athletics department of TSV Bayer 04 until 2017.
