Matthew Yates

Matthew Yates ( Matthew Stewart "Matt" Yates ; born February 4, 1969 in Rochford , Essex ) is a former British middle-distance runner .

In 1990, starting for England , he won bronze over 800 m at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland . At the European Athletics Championships in Split he was eighth over the same distance.

The following year he was tenth at the World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart over 1500 m and won the First Avenue Mile .

In 1992 he won over 1500 m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Genoa and reached the semi-finals at the Olympic Games in Barcelona .

Over the same distance he was sixth at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, eliminated in the preliminary run at the 1997 World Championships in Athens and sixth at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest.

Matthew Yates started for the Belgrave Harriers and was trained by his father Mike Yates.
