The 34th European Indoor Athletics Championships took place from March 3rd to 5th, 2017 in the Serbian capital Belgrade . Belgrade had already hosted the European Indoor Games in 1969 , the predecessor of the European Indoor Championships.

On May 3, 2014, the European Athletic Association (EAA) decided at its 139th official council meeting in Frankfurt am Main for Belgrade to host the European Indoor Championships. Belgrade prevailed against Istanbul and Toruń with its application .

567 athletes from 49 countries were registered, with the largest team from the German Athletics Association (DLV). The DLV had nominated 45 athletes (19 men and 26 women), of which 43 athletes took part. Florian Orth canceled his participation on February 27 due to muscular problems and criticized the DLV's nomination process in an open letter . Tim Nowak , who was nominated with reservations, was not considered by the European Athletics Association (EAA), as only the eight best heptathletes of the current indoor season were given a starting place.
