Verena Preiner (born February 1, 1995 in Ebensee , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian athlete and multiple national champion in heptathlon .

Athletic career

In 2011 Verena Preiner took part in an international championship for the first time, the youth world championships in Lille , France , where she finished 23rd in the heptathlon. In 2014 she took part in the Junior World Championships in Eugene , where she finished ninth with a personal best of 5530 points. In 2015, Preiner made her debut in the senior class at the Götzis all-around meeting , where she was the only Austrian to start. She was able to qualify with the performance there for the U23 European Championships in Tallinn , Estonia , where she finished fourth overall behind her compatriot Ivona Dadic . She was also part of the Austrian 4 x 400 meter relay, which was disqualified in the final.

At the European Championships in Amsterdam in July 2016 , she achieved seventh place in the heptathlon with a new personal best of 6050 points and thus achieved more than 6000 points for the first time. Originally, Preiner could not qualify for the European Championships, but moved into the starting field due to her good season best performance.

In the indoor pentathlon, she recorded her best performance at 4486 points, set up in January 2017 in Linz, and at that time represented the Austrian record. With this performance Preiner qualified for the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade , where she finished sixth.
After an ankle injury at the beginning of the outdoor season, Preiner was given the right to start the U23 European Championships . There she improved Ivona Dadic's Austrian U23 record to 6232 points, winning the silver medal behind the Swiss Caroline Agnou . With this performance she also qualified for the World Championships in London in August . There she was in 18th place after six disciplines and probably could have made up a few places through the 800 meter run, but in the meantime she suffered a severe asthma attack that made it impossible for her to finish the competition. Three weeks later she showed her good form once more when she won the gold medal at the Student World Games in Taipei . She not only set herself apart from the competition by around 400 points, but also came within eight points of her personal best.

In 2018, Preiner again improved her best performance at the Hypomeeting to 6308 points and thus qualified again for the European Championships in Berlin , where she finished eighth with 6337 points. At the European Indoor Championships 2019 in Glasgow , Verena Preiner finished sixth in the pentathlon with a new personal best of 4637 points. She celebrated her greatest success so far at the World Championships in Doha , where the 24-year-old won the bronze medal with 6560 points behind Briton Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium. She also secured the overall ranking of the IAAF Combined Events Series.

According to the evaluation of the IAAF World Annual Best List 2018, the three Austrian heptathletes Verena Preiner (6337 points), Ivona Dadic (6552 points; Union St. Pölten) and Sarah Lagger (6225 points; TGW Decathlon Union) took the first place in the global nation ranking 1.
