Hanno Charisius

Hanno Charisius (born July 27, 1972 in Karlsruhe ) is a German biologist , science journalist and non-fiction author . He writes for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit , Wired , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and for Krautreporter , among others , and worked as an editor at Technology Review . He is a lecturer at the National Institute for Science Communication .

Charisius studied biology at the University of Bremen from 1994 to 1999 with a focus on cell and molecular biology , virology , ecology and biotechnology . From 2010 to 2011 he was a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .

In his book Biohacking: Genetic Engineering from the Garage , published in 2013 together with Richard Friebe and Sascha Karberg , he examines the do-it-yourself biology scene in Europe and the USA . For articles on this topic they received the Hofschneider Research Prize for Science and Medical Journalism in 2012/2013 .

Charisius lives in Munich.
