Krautreporter is a German online magazine that has been published since October 2014. The platform was financed through crowdfunding . This should enable independent journalism without advertising .

history

In 2012, Krautreporter started as a crowdfunding platform for journalism; In 2014 Krautreporter was founded as a GmbH by Sebastian Esser (editor), Philipp Schwörbel (managing director) and Alexander von Streit (editor-in-chief) . Up to June 13, 2014, 15,000 subscribers (“members”) had raised an amount of 900,000 euros to finance this. The donors paid 60 euros for the first year and were given the opportunity to comment on the articles on the platform that were freely readable for everyone; they could also download the articles in EPUB format for reading in the e-reader . The beta version of the online magazine was released for subscribers in September 2014 and finally officially for all readers on October 24, 2014. The De Correspondent portal from the Netherlands , founded in 2013, was a model for the project .

There was movement among the authors during the first year. In particular, the media journalist Stefan Niggemeier left the project to prepare his own Übermedien platform , which has been published since January 2016. The initial concept of the free author network - a major criticism of Niggemeiers - was abandoned in favor of an editorial team that plans the authors' topics. Editorial members were u. a. well-known journalists such as Thomas Wiegold , Theresa Bäuerlein , Andrea Hanna Hünniger and Richard Gutjahr .

By the end of the first year, the number of Krautreporter subscribers had been reduced to a little more than a third. As a result, the sponsoring company was converted into a cooperative . In 2016 it had a good 350 members who had paid in 150,000 euros; in January 2018 there were "around 400". In addition, a paywall was gradually introduced so that the full content is only accessible to paying members. That had a positive effect on the subscriber development. After the low of around 5,000 users at the end of the second financial year, the number of subscribers has recovered on a net basis. Today the magazine has around 13,000 members. Overall, the establishment of the cooperative had the effect that the "debate about the project had calmed down a lot", summarized the Meedia industry service in January 2018, when Alexander von Streit became editor and handed over the editor-in-chief to Theresa Bäuerlein and Rico Grimm.

In 2019 Krautreporter received the Grimme Online Award .

offer

Krautreporter does not publish its articles in traditional sections , but in chronological order in an overview, as you would know from a blog .

The offer primarily includes long and profound reports on a wide variety of current topics. One focus, for example, was the background to the refugee crisis during 2015.
