Live and act

education and study

Gutjahr attended the German School of Journalism in Munich between 1993 and 1998 . During this period, he also studied political and communication science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He graduated with a degree in journalism . He took part in an exchange at the Center de formation des journalistes de Paris and between 1998 and 1999 in a semester program at the American University in Washington, DC .

Journalistic activity

From 1992 to 1996 he worked as a news editor, live reporter and presenter for Radio Gong , which was followed by a position at Bayern 3 from 1996 to 1999 . Gutjahr worked as a freelancer and cartoonist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . From January 1999 he worked for five months as a trainee for CNN in the Washington office. He then worked for the public television stations Das Erste and Bayerischer Rundfunk , for programs such as Live from Alabama .

Richard Gutjahr was an employee of the editor-in-chief of Bavarian television and moderator of the Rundschau-Nacht . From May 14th to June 7th 2012 Gutjahr moderated a social TV project Rundshow developed by him with changing co-moderators, including Daniel Fiene, Sascha Lobo and Sandra Rieß . He has also been writing a weekly column in the Münchner Abendzeitung since mid-2010 . He also writes for other daily newspapers, such as B. the Berliner Tagesspiegel or for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

In 2010, after waiting in line for 23 hours in front of the Apple store in New York, he became known as the world's first buyer of an iPad .

He became known to a wider public through a report from Cairo during the revolution in Egypt in 2011 . Gutjahr decided to go to Cairo spontaneously and without an assignment while staying in Israel .

Gutjahr was co-initiator of LobbyPlag , a web platform that set itself the goal of demonstrating the direct influence of lobbyists on politicians in connection with the planned EU data protection regulation. The research results, which among other things showed that parliamentarians had copied large parts of their bills from lobby papers, attracted media attention worldwide.

On July 14, 2016, he happened to witness the rampage of the attack in Nice while he was doing a sabbatical with his family in southern France. He reported on Twitter as well as in the ARD night magazine and on Bayerischer Rundfunk. He made a video available to WDR that apparently shows the beginning of the attack ; He expressly decided against publishing the material on social networks because he wanted to leave it up to the broadcasters to decide which images should be shown. On July 22, 2016 Gutjahr reported live from the attack on the Olympia shopping center for the ARD Tagesschau . Originally on the way to Bayerischer Rundfunk, he was informed about the incident by a friend, later published by his daughter, and was one of the first reporters to arrive at the crime scene. Conspiracy theories later claimed on social networks that his presence on the spot was not accidental; rather, he was accused of being involved in the events. Since then, Gutjahr has been fighting against these allegations as well as against the unauthorized use of his recordings of the crime in Nice. The then television editor-in-chief of Bayerischer Rundfunk, Sigmund Gottlieb , also presented himself in front of Gutjahr.

For his reporter services and a. in Nice and Munich Gutjahr was voted Reporter of the Year (2nd place) by Medium Magazin in 2016 . The jury's statement said: “A pioneer in the digital scene. In 2016 he proved in three major situations how prudent reporter work works: the terrorist attack in Nice, the attack in Munich and the mobile reporting experiment for the NDR in the US election. An opposite pole to those who like to get lost in the speculative jungle in such situations. "In January 2018 he had the domain of the right-wing populist magazine Compact seized after it had not paid for legal costs that had arisen because Gutjahr against dishonorable suspicions, who had appeared in Compact had obtained an injunction . In June 2018 he lost a trial before the Cologne Higher Regional Court against Gerhard Wisnewski because of a passage in his book that was concealed - covered up - forgotten because "Wisnewski's presentation is far too vague" "to qualify as a suspicious transaction report at all ".

Since October 2018 he has been co-founder and editor-in-chief of the electric mobility portal emobly .

Gutjahr was a permanent freelancer at the BR until the end of 2019 ; after 22 years he stopped working there. In an open letter he criticized the BR and its director Ulrich Wilhelm for the lack of support against the ongoing attacks by "conspiracy theorists, neo-Nazis and Reich citizens " in his view . According to Gutjahr, Wilhelm and his closest collaborators tried “to deceive the control committee of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and repeatedly bend the truth behind closed doors”. Bayerischer Rundfunk rejected the allegations and stated that the letter contained "no new aspects and is essentially incorrect". The statement also states: "The BR strictly rejects the accusation of lies and deception by the artistic director Ulrich Wilhelm." In 2020 Gutjahr switched to Gabor Steingart's company Media Pioneer, where he moderated the technology podcast Tech Briefing .
