Thomas Wiegold
Thomas Wiegold (* 1960 ) is a German journalist specializing in international defense and security policy , the military and the armed forces . Since the German mission in the context of UNOSOM II , Wiegold has been reporting regularly on areas of operation of the Bundeswehr on his blog Augen straicht! .
Career and work
Wiegold began studying Protestant theology , which he never finished. He refused basic military service and did alternative civilian service .
From 1981 to 1986 Wiegold was a correspondent for the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) in Kiel, Hamburg and Dortmund, then until 1999 for the Associated Press and from 1999 to 2010 he wrote for Focus .
He has been working as a freelance journalist since 2010 . Among other things, he wrote for the German edition of Wired magazine, for Zeit Online and for the news magazine Der Spiegel . Together with Holger Stark he covered in summer 2011 in the mirror the planned export of battle tanks of the type Leopard 2 by Saudi Arabia on what both 2012 for the Henri Nannen Prize in the category Investigation were nominated. In the web video format Jung & Naiv , Thomas Wiegold is a regular guest interviewer on the topics of the German armed forces, the military and security policy. He has been part of the Techniktagebuch authors' collective since 2014 .
Blog eyes straight ahead!
Wiegold runs the security policy blog Augen Straight Ahead! , whose articles were also briefly published in Focus magazine until 2010. In 2011 it was awarded the LeadAward in silver and nominated for the Grimme Online Award , and in 2013 it was honored with the Golden Hedgehog of the Reservist Association .
Podcast to be on the safe side
Since July 2018 Wiegold discussed along with Carlo Masala and Frank Sauer (both University of the Bundeswehr Munich ) and Ulrike Franke ( European Council on Foreign Relations ) in the German podcast safe side on issues of security policy .
