The European is a German and English language opinion and debate magazine that appears both online and in print. Founding publisher and editor-in-chief until 2015 was Alexander Görlach . In 2015 the medium was taken over by the Weimer Media Group . From 2016 to 2017 Oswald Metzger was editor-in-chief. Since June 2017, the philosopher Stefan Groß , who has been text chief since 2015 and continues to exercise this function, has been the sole editor-in-chief. The European has been published online in German since 2009, online in English since 2010 and in print four times a year since 2012.

Self-image

According to its own statement, the name “The European” is intended to reflect the debate as a peculiarity of European intellectual and cultural history. Even if European topics are the focus of the magazine again and again, The European does not see itself as a pure European magazine.

Neither the website nor the printed magazine bring news , but opinions, which are presented in the form of debates , columns and conversations. The European wants to “initiate social debates and continue them permanently”.

According to its own account, The European has no specific political orientation.

development

An English-language branch of the magazine launched at the beginning of October 2010 is aimed at the international market. The European maintains partnerships with, among others, the Huffington Post and Stratfor in the USA, Mediapart and Arte in France, the Standard in Austria, Linkiesta in Italy as well as ZDF , N24 , bild.de and the Zeppelin University .

On December 5, 2014, Börsenmedien AG bought the majority of The European from entrepreneur Bernd Förtsch . Görlach still holds 15 percent of the company and initially remained publisher and editor-in-chief. Equipped with fresh growth capital, The European announced that it would further develop both the print magazine and the English online edition.

On July 24, 2015, the magazine announced that Börsenmedien AG had withdrawn from its investment commitment. After the announcement of the majority owner Bernd Förtsch that he would come on board as a long-term, strategic partner, his announcement came as a surprise to the team. This was completely dismissed. The magazine appeared to be about to close.

On August 21, 2015, The European announced that the Munich-based Weimer Media Group had bought the magazine. Publisher Wolfram Weimer and founder Alexander Görlach know each other from the magazine Cicero , which Weimer was the founder. Görlach accepted an invitation to Harvard University , but is still connected to the magazine through the honorary title of founding editor. The Weimer Media Group announced that the print magazine would appear four times a year. In addition, the online magazine will resume work and the newsletter business will be expanded.

The article “Then close your blouse!” By columnist Birgit Kelle ( Volle Kelle ) became “Social Media Phenomenon of the Year” in 2013 due to its viral distribution in social networks.

On October 1, 2015, fifteen former columnists from The European launched their own platform.

The European has, among others, the organization European Institute for Climate & Energy publish articles without naming the author on the magazine's website. The organization rejects the scientific consensus on man-made climate change and is not a scientific institute. A disclosure of the financing of the association or the income of the members does not take place.

Print edition

In June 2012 Görlach announced a printed edition, the first issue of which was presented on September 24, 2012 in Berlin. It appears quarterly, has a circulation of 50,000 and is distributed in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . According to Görlach, the authors should share in the profit from kiosk sales, with ten percent of the net proceeds from the first three months after the publication of a magazine.

Events

The European organized events like the concert series “30 Minuten” at irregular intervals, which took place in cooperation with the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Club Cookies.
