Wolfram Weimer (born November 11, 1964 in Gelnhausen , Hessen ) is a German publisher and publicist . Among other things, he was editor-in-chief of the Welt and Berliner Morgenpost (2000 to 2002), of the political magazine Cicero, which he founded, and of the news magazine Focus (2010 to 2011). In 2012 he founded the Weimer Media Group , in which The European , WirtschaftsKurier , Pardon and Börse am Sonntag are published.

Life

Wolfram Weimer's father Alois Weimer was a German and religion teacher in Portugal , where his son Wolfram attended the German School in Porto . In 1983 he left the Grimmelshausen High School in Gelnhausen as the best high school graduate in Hesse with an average grade of 1.0.

Weimer studied history, German, political science and economics. In 1986 he received a scholarship from the American University (AU) in Washington, DC , as well as a scholarship from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and in 1989 he obtained a Magister Artium at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

The dissertation ( magna cum laude ) on the American "banking war", published in 1991 under the title The Controversy over the Bank of North America 1783–1787 , emerged from a research year in Washington . In 1998 Weimer received a research grant from the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies in Berlin.

During his school days Weimer founded the school newspaper Schwarzer Elch , wrote for the Gelnhäuser Tageblatt from 1980 and for the Main-Kinzig-Nachrichten from 1981. After completing his studies, he worked as an intern at dpa in Washington . From 1990 to 1994, Weimer was the business editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Frankfurt, from 1994 to 1998 a correspondent for the FAZ in Madrid, from 1998 to 2000 deputy editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Die Welt in Berlin, from 2000 to 2001 its editor-in-chief and from 2001 to 2002 double Editor-in-chief of the world and the Berliner Morgenpost . He left Axel Springer AG at the end of 2002.

In 2003, Weimer won over the Swiss media company Ringier for the idea of developing a new German political magazine from Potsdam . The magazine Cicero appeared for the first time in April 2004. Weimer's stated intention was to create a "German New Yorker ". He remained the magazine's editor-in-chief until January 2010.

In autumn 2009, Burda-Verlag recruited Weimer as the new editor-in-chief of the news magazine Focus , becoming the successor to Helmut Markwort . Focus was repositioned under his leadership and started a cooperation with the "Economist". After leaving Focus, Weimer founded his own publishing company, the Weimer Media Group, in 2012 .

At the end of 2012, Weimer brought out a special issue for the 50th anniversary of the satirical magazine Pardon , which existed from 1962 to 1982 , for which he collected contributions from various humorists.

Weimer currently writes for n-tv in his weekly Person of the Week column . He has been the publisher of the opinion and debate magazine The European since 2015 .

Weimer is married to the publisher Christiane Goetz-Weimer and has three children.

Political positions

In environmental and climate protection policy , Weimer advocates freedom of choice and positive incentives. He is against tax increases and instead wants to exempt everything from tax that is climate-friendly. He also speaks out against a political commitment to the electric car and instead wants to leave the technological path to achieve emission-free vehicles open. He sees California's environmental policy as a role model.

He represents economically liberal positions in regulatory policy . He calls for a reduction in the state quota and extensive deregulation .

In the integration debate, Weimer criticizes “naive” multiculturalism and speaks of a “multi-cultural lie”. Weimer generally rates the so-called "return of religion " positively and sees it as an opportunity for a cultural renaissance in the West . He considers the German national anthem to be a “historical wound” because its author Hoffmann von Fallersleben was also a monarchist , nationalist and anti-Semite who, by “unity” of the Germans, meant “a unity free of Jews” to the exclusion of Jews .

In matters of foreign policy, he speaks out against the continuation of the Bundeswehr's deployment in Afghanistan .

On the subject of the Greek financial crisis , in May 2012 he advised Greece to leave the euro zone quickly .

The climate package of the Federal Government in 2019 evaluates Weimer as "politically and technically very well done", but missed a "positive innovation effect".

Weimer criticizes that there are “no Europeans” among the 20 largest digital companies in the world and calls for a capital offensive in innovative industries.

Public offices

Weimer was a member of the media council of the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (mabb) from 2003 to January 2015 .
