Media Council

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Media councils are broadcasting supervisory bodies set up in the state media authorities of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin / Brandenburg, Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein, Saarland and Saxony. The competence of the media councils extends to privately financed broadcasting; in their function they correspond to the broadcasting councils of the public broadcasters. Typical tasks are the approval of broadcasters, the supervision of programs and the handling of program complaints.

Due to the state sovereignty in the broadcasting sector , the designation, the specific scope of tasks and the composition of the media councils are not regulated nationwide. The corresponding body in North Rhine-Westphalia is known as the media commission , in Bremen and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the state broadcasting committee and in Hesse, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia an assembly . The designation decision-making bodies of the media authorities or media commissions of the federal states is therefore often used as a generic term . The national coordination body of all 14 state media commissions is the committee conference at the Working Group of State Media Authorities (ALM).
