During the Second World War , his family stayed with relatives in Rodach . There he attended elementary school, then for two years the high school Casimirianum in Coburg and finally graduated from the humanistic Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt.

journalism

After training as a journalist in 1955/1956, Markwort worked in local journalism for various newspapers in Darmstadt , Wuppertal , Nuremberg and Düsseldorf from 1956 to 1966 , wrote for the newspaper of the publisher Waldemar Schweitzer and headed the Düsseldorfer stern editorial team.

From 1966 to 1970 he headed the program magazine Bild + Funk , after which he switched to Gong (1970–1979). While working at Gong, Markwort developed print media such as the current one and Ein Herz für Tiere .

From 1985 to 1991 Markwort was the managing director of Radio Gong 2000 and in 1985 he became a managing partner of Medienpool GmbH, which acquired an interest in Antenne Bayern in 1988 .

In June 1992, Markwort switched to Hubert Burda Media . As a board member he shaped the Schweriner Volkszeitung and from 1993 as editor-in-chief of the news magazine Focus , which was conceived as an alternative to Spiegel . Focus achieved a relatively high circulation and was supplemented by the business paper Focus-Money , of which he is the editor, as well as Focus TV and Focus Online , of which he has been managing director since 1996. The focus's advertising slogan “Facts, facts, facts” became a popular phrase . This was humorously processed by the satirical magazine Titanic as part of a cartoon as "Ficken, Ficken, Ficken", which ultimately resulted in an unsuccessful complaint by Markwort.

Since 1994, Markwort has held the position of managing director with sole power of representation at Burda Broadcast Media GmbH. From December 2001 to July 2004 he was chairman of the supervisory board of "Tomorrow Focus AG". From June 2002 to autumn 2010 he was chairman of the supervisory board of Playboy Deutschland Publishing .

Laudation by Markwort for Henryk Broder, 2007

Markwort retired as Focus editor-in-chief in autumn 2010. He was succeeded by Wolfram Weimer , who came from the political magazine Cicero . Until the end of 2016, Markwort was the editor of Focus. From the beginning of 2013 until the end of 2016, the previous editor-in-chief Uli Baur was co-editor.

Television and new media

Markwort has been present on television regularly since 1989, for example until 2007 as a regular guest at 3sat's “Stammtisch” or until 2003 as co-presenter of Gerd Ruge in “NeunzehnZehn” and until 2007 in the program “bookmark”. In the ZDF - search for the most important Germans in 2003 presented Markwort Otto von Bismarck .

He caused a sensation on June 12, 2005 on the program “Sabine Christiansen ” when he accused the political left in general and his neighbor Ottmar Schreiner (SPD) in particular that their economic policy was “ national socialism ”. Schreiner then accused Markwort of alluding to the term " National Socialism " with the statement .

In addition to these positions, from October 2007 to March 2018, Markwort headed the TV discussion group Sunday Stammtisch on Bavarian television. Over the years, Markwort has built up a small realm of radio holdings, including Antenne Bayern and Hit Radio FHH . In February 2016 he took part in the technical service Uplink Network from Dusseldorf for the period from spring 2011 he was selected as the new host of the Sat.1 -Talkshow Talk in the Tower , which was thwarted by the Bavarian television. On May 8, 2016, Markwort stated in the BR broadcast Sunday Stammtisch : “I heard from a reliable source that the SPD chairman Sigmar Gabriel wants to resign.” He immediately denied. Markwort then claimed that he felt abused by his informant . The clarity with which Markwort had clearly committed himself to this assertion brought him a lot of ridicule on the Internet and among satirists.

As a result of his candidacy for the Bavarian state parliament, Markwort had to give up the moderation of the Sunday round table at Bayerischer Rundfunk in March 2018, because due to internal BR service regulations, the candidacy for a political office is not compatible with the moderation of a broadcast in the BR. Since April 8, 2018, Tilmann Schöberl has temporarily taken over the moderation. Since January 2019, Bayerischer Rundfunk has found a successor for Markwort in Hans Werner Kilz as the moderator of the Sunday round table.

politics

On February 12, 2017, he was a member of the 16th Federal Assembly for the election of the Federal President as the nominated representative of the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament for the FDP .

In March 2018, it became known that Markwort was applying for a member of parliament for the Bavarian FDP in the 2018 state election . He ran in the election on list position 16 of the FDP in the constituency of Upper Bavaria and was also a direct candidate in constituency 124 Munich-Land-Süd .

Due to his very good voting result, Markwort moved up to second place on Upper Bavaria's electoral list and thus made it into the state parliament. He opened it as retirement president on November 5, 2018.

Policy funding

In order to finance his own election campaign for a seat in the Bavarian state parliament, Markwort, who was 82 at the time, auctioned a TV role in a series on the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR). Markwort had told the producer of the Hubert ohne Staller series that it was a charitable cause. He didn't mention that it was his campaign funding. Markwort would have demonstrated “that you can and may make a public broadcaster at your service. He showed that a politician can have his election campaign financed by the BR, ”said Ulrike Gote , Deputy State Parliament President of the Greens. The BR prevented the appropriate occupation.

BR Broadcasting Council member

The FDP Bayern wants to send Markwort to the Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR). Media entrepreneur Helmut Markwort has a financial stake in the Bavarian private broadcaster Radio Gong and the largest radio broadcaster, the private Antenne Bayern . The private broadcasters compete with the BR programs.

In a letter to the Bavarian State Parliament, the Chairman of the Broadcasting Council, Lorenz Wolf, urged it to anchor new provisions on bias and waiting periods in the Broadcasting Act. Markwort had repeatedly criticized Bayerischer Rundfunk before it was broadcast. After a legal back and forth, the BR Broadcasting Council finally bowed in the summer of 2019.

Private

In addition to tennis, Markwort also plays football and, as a member of the board of directors of FC Bayern Munich, sometimes accompanies its team to games. In Focus he wrote about his club under the pseudonym Moritz Rodach without disclosing his conflict of interest. In this respect, Hans Leyendecker pointed out the irony of the story that in 2013, of all places, Markworts Focus was the first to report on the tax affair of Uli Hoeneß , while Markwort himself complained above all about the violation of tax secrecy.

Markwort is considered a friend of acting; he was friends with Günter Strack and can sometimes be seen on stage in the Darmstadt “ Datterich ”. In 2010, Markwort played “Death” in “The Hessian Everyman” in open-air performances at the Frankfurt Volkstheater . and the role of "Colonel Pickering" in the performance of the musical " My Fair Lady " on the Altusried open-air stage. There were also smaller roles in film and television productions.

Markwort has been a member of the FDP since 1968 and since 2003 a member of the board of trustees of the Christian Liebig Foundation , which he co-founded and which was founded in memory of the FOCUS journalist Christian Liebig who was killed in Iraq and which campaigns for more education in Africa. In 2007, Markwort chose the "born polemicist " Henryk Broder as the sole judge of the Ludwig Börne Prize. For the 2017 federal presidential election , Markwort was elected a member of the Federal Assembly at the suggestion of the Baden-Württemberg FDP . In October 2017, Markwort was selected for the FDP in the district of Munich-Bogenhausen as a candidate for the state election; he reached 32nd place on the FDP list. In April 2018, it was announced that he would be a direct candidate and successor to in the district of Munich-Land-Süd Tobias Thalhammer is planned and also takes his list position 16.

Markwort has a son from a previous marriage. His partner has been Patricia Riekel since 1996 ; she is or was editor-in-chief of the Burda papers “ Bunte ”, “ InStyle ” and “ Amica ”, which was discontinued in 2009 .
