Henryk M. Broder (2013)

Henryk Marcin Broder (own name Henryk Modest Broder ; born August 20, 1946 in Katowice , Poland ) is a German publicist and author .

After finishing school, Broder wrote for Konkret , Frankfurter Rundschau and the St. Pauli-Nachrichten . From 1995 to 2010 he mainly wrote columns and polemics for the magazine Der Spiegel and for the Berlin daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel . He has been working for Die Welt , Die Welt am Sonntag and Welt Online since 2011 . His works Hurray, we capitulate! and that's crazy! My German diary are bestsellers . He is the founder, co-operator and author of the blog The Axis of the Good .

Career

Origin and studies

Broder comes from a Jewish family of craftsmen; his parents were concentration camp survivors . According to Broder, the mother had been deported to Auschwitz in 1945 , but escaped with three other Jewish women on an evacuation march . The father, who came from Russia, was a survivor of the Buchenwald concentration camp .

Broder was born in 1946 in Katowice, Upper Silesia. In 1957 he left Poland and came to the Federal Republic of Germany with his parents via Vienna in 1958 . There he first lived in Cologne , where he obtained his Abitur at the mathematics and natural sciences Hansagymnasium in the fall of 1966 . He later described his time at this school with the words:

“It is one of the worst memories of my life. I still dream today that I will not pass the Abitur. It wasn't a school, it was a penitentiary. That's why I don't want to write anything about it. "

- Henryk M. Broder

Broder then studied law , sociology , economics and statistics at the University of Cologne , but finished his studies without a degree.

Start of journalistic activity

At the Hansagymnasium in Cologne, Broder had already edited the school newspaper Hansekogge in upper school . After graduating from high school, he began to work for the West German Broadcasting Corporation alongside his studies . a. Press spokesman for the International Essen Song Days 1968 . In 1969 he founded the anti-authoritarian and radical-liberal magazine po together with the pop impresario Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser , the graphic artist Reinhard Hippen and the writer and journalist Fred Viebahn , whom he had known since their school days together in the Cologne “Political Working Group Oberschulen” -po-po (pop politics pornography), which was discontinued after a few issues, followed in 1970 by another short-lived journal in newspaper format, bubu / eiapopeyea , for which only Broder and Viebahn were responsible. At the same time, Broder began working as a writer for the St. Pauli-Nachrichten in Hamburg . The weekly erotic newspaper, founded by photographer Günter Zint in 1968, achieved print runs of around 800,000 per issue as early as 1970 with a combination of contact ads, eroticism and left-wing political agitation . Broder met journalists Günter Wallraff and Stefan Aust , among others . Broder's first book (Who is Afraid of Pornography) was published by Melzer Verlag in 1970 .

Confrontation with the left and residence in Israel

Broder also worked for the music magazine song and in the 1970s for Pardon and Spontan , both of which often linked explicitly erotic lead stories with a left attitude. During the same period he began to grapple with anti-Semitic tendencies within the left. From 1979 to 1981 he edited the journal Freie Jüdische Voice together with the author and Deutsche Welle editor Peter Finkelgruen . In 1981 he left Germany and moved to Israel for ten years to work there, including as an author for the English-language daily newspaper Jerusalem Post . Looking back in 1993, he cited an article by journalist Ingrid Strobl in Emma , in which Israel's right to exist , was denied, as the reason for his departure from Germany . He no longer wanted to deal with “left anti-Semites à la Schwarzer and Paczensky”. Thereupon the journalist Gert von Paczensky sued , and Broder undertook not to use the phrase “left anti-Semite à la Paczensky” any more. According to Broder, Alice Schwarzer is said to have declared an employee to be intolerable because she was "the lover of a militant Jew".

An anthology proposed by Wolfgang Pohrt together with Eike Geisel and Christian Schultz-Gerstein on the relationship of the German left to anti-Semitism in 1984 because of his conflict with Alice Schwarzer at the time did not materialize. Broder also took offense at the PorNO campaign initiated by Schwarzer , which accused the press of depicting women as sexist and as objects. Among other things, he assumed that Schwarzer had an authoritarian character .

The delivery of Broder's book The Eternal Antisemite was temporarily stopped in connection with statements about the scandal surrounding the play Der Müll, die Stadt and the death of Rainer Werner Fassbinder after the director of the Frankfurt theater , Günther Rühle , obtained an injunction against Broder's accusations of anti-Semitism would have. Based on the book title and the topic, the film documentary The Eternal Anti-Semite was created in 2017 , which Broder realized with the director and film producer Joachim Schroeder .

Return to Germany

In 1993, Manfred Bissinger hired Broder for the Hamburg newspaper Die Woche . He then began writing for Der Spiegel magazine and its online edition in 1995 .

Broder also published in Die Zeit , in profil , in Weltwoche and in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In the 1980s he moderated the SFB talk show “People” from Café Kranzler in Berlin with Elke Heidenreich and others . He is co-editor of the Jewish calendar , a collection of texts and quotations on recent and up-to-date Jewish history and culture that is published annually in pocket book format.

Broder lives in Berlin and is married to Hilde Recher-Broder, an Augsburg publisher. Together they have an adult daughter named Hannah.

Activities and topics

Broder wrote several books on Jewish culture, the German-Jewish relationship and on hostility towards Jews and anti-Americanism in German society. He contrasts the very contradicting, often drastic public debate and confrontation in Israel with the - in his opinion - polemical tones, hardly used to German public opinion.

Broder, together with Dan Diner , Wolfgang Pohrt and Eike Geisel , brought criticism of anti-Zionism to the political left in the 1970s , which contributed to the emergence of the so-called anti - Germans . In 1991, Broder's interview with Hans-Christian Ströbele in Jerusalem, who in 1991 headed an Israel delegation of the Greens, became known. Ströbele's theses on military support for Israel or on Israeli responsibility for the attacks by Saddam Hussein provoked considerable protests in Israel after publication in the Jerusalem Post (in Germany in the SZ and the taz ), whereupon Ströbele broke off his visit to Israel prematurely Board spokesman for the Greens lost.

Broder's break with the German left - above all in connection with the accusation of anti-Americanism and anti-Zionism -, the public handling of Islamism and the German coming to terms with the past are central issues alongside the Middle East conflict and Israel Broder. With regard to the Federal Republic of Germany, he called the takeover of former Nazis and NS-fellow travelers in their offices the “most serious birth defect in the Federal Republic”, a mortgage that has not yet been processed. From the beginning he supported the Iraq war and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein . He accuses the Europeans of pursuing a policy of appeasement towards dictatorship , Islamism and terrorism . For a while he also dealt with German reunification and published some cultural-political works, for example on the Jewish calendar or on Berlin's Scheunenviertel . Together with Eike Geisel , a co-author from his time in Hamburg, he drew attention to a previously neglected chapter of cultural policy during the Nazi era with publications and a documentary about the Jewish Cultural Association .

In addition to his usual thematic focus, Broder wrote a travel diary for Spiegel Online in 2005 with individual contributions on art, culture, everyday life and the landscape of Iceland . Broder appreciates Iceland above all because of the factual absence of its three “problem peoples”: no Jews, no Arabs and only a few Germans .

Together with Dirk Maxeiner and others, Broder runs the journalistic network The Axis of the Good , which he claims to be liberal and pro-Western, but also perceived as anti-Islamic , in whose weblog he comments on daily events.

On October 21, 2009 he announced his decision to run for the office of President of the Central Council of Jews , whose condition he described as "pathetic". Among other things, he wanted to work to abolish the criminality of Holocaust denial . However, he withdrew this candidacy ten days later.

For the 14-part TV series Entweder Broder - Die Deutschland-Safari, which was produced by Hessischer Rundfunk , Bayerischer Rundfunk and Saarländischer Rundfunk for the television program Das Erste , Henryk M. Broder undertook with the German-Egyptian in autumn 2010 Author and political scientist Hamed Abdel-Samad took a 30,000 km long road trip through Germany.

On January 29, 2019, Broder accepted an invitation from the parliamentary group of Alternative für Deutschland and gave a half-hour speech at their public group meeting in Berlin. He apologized for the lack of distance to Alice Weidel , who hugged him on the occasion of a photo. Liane Bednarz thinks that Broder probably achieved something with this speech, because since he is “quite popular in the AfD milieu”, it has “greater weight”. Elsewhere, however, he “made the AfD a victim”. Margarete van Ackeren wrote in Focus that Broder had distanced himself from Gauland's “bird shit” statement , but it was also a trivialization on the part of Broder when Gauland's derailment appeared “as part of a list of underdeveloped table manners”. The fact that what is meant is seldom clear is “an important part” of Broder's “game with the public”. She also described Broder's doubt about climate change as a “ denial of reality” and stated that anyone who really wanted to hit or annoy him should “give him the very highest penalty: ignore.” In the taz , Markus Kowalski asked whether Broder was using the formulation of the "room full of Nazis, neo-Nazis, crypto-Nazis and para-Nazis" made fun of the Nazi term with regard to the AfD. His words were “so full of irony” that it could easily have been interpreted as “that he had agreed with the AfD in almost all positions”.

In the movie Kill Me Today, Tomorrow I'm Sick! Broder played the journalist Henryk , who worked after the war in Kosovo as an employee of an OSCE media project in Pristina .

Broder is agnostic , but assumes the non-existence of God because of the Holocaust.

Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism

Broder describes anti-Zionism as a form of anti-Semitism: “There is no anti-Zionism that does not have its origins in anti-Semitism.” “An anti-Zionist Jew tends to be an anti-Semite. For both non-Jews and Jews, anti-Zionism is just an excuse to present their anti-Semitism in a politically aseptic form, so to speak. "

Broder's book The Eternal Anti-Semite , published in 1986, led to heated controversy. Broder did not focus his analyzes on the extremist fringes of society, but on left and bourgeois positions. Anti-Semitism is an amalgam of different, otherwise opposing positions that are not aimed at perceived or projected properties like a prejudice, but rather as resentment towards the existence of Jews and the State of Israel . Broder writes:

“Left anti-Semites, who have read their Marx , cannot stand Jews because they are capitalists, exploiters and entrepreneurs. Right-wing anti-Semites who refer to Dühring , Stoecker or Marr hate Jews because they are revolutionaries, socialists and skeptics, bearers of the corrosive spirit, a danger to the West, morality and free enterprise. Believers do not like Jews because many Jews are heretics and staunch atheists . Free spirits resent the Jews for still clinging to their old beliefs. Feminists who have not read a line by Thomas Aquinas or Francis of Assisi are fully aware of the notorious misogyny of Judaism. Animal rights activists and vegetarians are upset about the kosher slaughter of animals. Internationalists accuse Jews of having founded their own state, and nationalists complain that not all Jews have moved there as one. So everyone chooses what suits them to satisfy their passion. No matter what it's about: It's the Jew's fault! "

Broder also presented his distinction between prejudice and resentment at a public hearing of the Interior Committee of the German Bundestag on the fight against anti-Semitism on June 15, 2008. Anti-Semitism has changed; Instead of dealing with widespread prejudices or with outsider positions such as Horst Mahler , modern anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist resentments, also practiced in the mainstream, should be thematized and examined more closely.

A court case against Evelyn Hecht-Galinski for accusations of anti-Semitism led to strong press coverage and to a fundamental debate about anti-Semitism / criticism of Israel in German and English-language media.

The break with the left

After the hijacking of an Air France passenger plane by German and Arab terrorists and the Israeli liberation operation, Operation Entebbe , in 1976 Broder openly spoke of left-wing anti-Semitism. The selection of Jewish passengers by German terrorists from the Revolutionary Cells did not upset him, because they could have been put “on the account of some crazy people and political gangsters” with whom he had nothing to do with. However, he was "horrified" by reactions from people in his political environment with whom he had previously demonstrated against the Vietnam War . Broder quotes press reports and headlines, for example from Spiegel, in which the liberation action was described in the jargon of Wehrmacht reports as “Israel's Blitzkrieg” and “Desert Fox Action”.

Broder accused members of the left of condemning Israel as an aggressor and alleging a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty of a member state of the United Nations”, which was disproportionate in view of the situation in Entebbe. He accused a considerable part of the West German left of having made declarations of solidarity in favor of Idi Amins . In 1998, Broder highlighted the reaction to Operation Entebbe as the time of his final break with this part of the left.

Broder did not shy away from violent insults against opponents of US and Israeli politics, especially those from the peace movement . He described Noam Chomsky as an “absolute psycho”, Alfred Grosser as “disgusting Alfred” and “post-senile chatterbox” and imputed Horst-Eberhard Richter to a “ psychoanalysis at al-Qaeda level”. He described Jörg Zink , among other things, as an " old Nazi in theologian costume".

Middle East conflict

Broder sees the attention to the Middle East conflict compared to other conflicts with higher numbers of victims, longer conflict duration and yet significantly less resonance (such as Tibet and Darfur ) as an indication of anti-Semitic tendencies in the German public. He also criticizes the level of many statements made about this conflict and doubts the competence and neutrality of the actors present in the media.

A call Broders occasion of the raid Iraqi troops on Kuwait in 1990, threats and rocket attacks of Saddam Hussein against Israel, "to all those good people that their philo had carried before like a monstrance, they should now actively demonstrate its solidarity and travel to the threatened Israel “, Was taken seriously by his former Hamburg colleague Günter Wallraff , who showed solidarity with the threatened Israelis and described his impressions of aerial alarms and rocket strikes on site.

Broder sharply criticized the award of the German-Israeli journalist Felicia Langer with the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class on July 16, 2009 because of Langer's position on Israel. His email exchange with Tübingen's mayor Boris Palmer was later published in full in the Stuttgarter Nachrichten .

Islam

From the mid-2000s on, Broder published numerous articles on Islamism and Islamist terrorism . He criticizes the in his view insufficient examination of these phenomena in parts of European society and the media as well as the general attitude of "1.5 billion Muslims around the world who are chronically offended and have unpredictable reactions". In his 2006 book Hurray, We Surrender! From the desire to buckle , Broder pleads for an emphatic defense of freedom of expression and the unreserved condemnation of terrorist attacks. In it he turns against what he sees as a false public image of the terrorists and describes his envy “of the terrorists. Not only because of the attention they receive, but because of the idealistic motives that are assumed or assigned to them. "

Broder particularly criticized the willingness of German foreign politicians to negotiate with the Afghan Taliban and the Iranian government. He noted that the party leader of the Greens, Claudia Roth , had covered her head during a visit to Iran and then campaigned for a cultural exchange. In a polemic, he insinuated that, when the opportunity arose, he could also have been enthusiastic about the camp theater of the Theresienstadt concentration camp .

immigration

He criticized the treatment of Muslim immigrants in Germany as being too indulgent and spoke of “hostility towards foreigners” in this context: A new phenomenon was “that some migrants despise the society into which they have come”.

In his acceptance speech for the presentation of the Scopus Award from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Broder stated that "anti-Semitism in the Muslim community and among refugees is currently as taboo as the left-wing hatred of Jews was then".

Broder was one of the first to sign the “ Joint Declaration 2018 ” initiative launched by Vera Lengsfeld . In its wording, Germany is being damaged by “illegal mass immigration” and solidarity is expressed with peaceful demonstrators who are demonstrating for the restoration of the “constitutional order at the borders of our country”. The declaration was illustrated with a photo of a women's march supported by those around the AfD .

Broder publishes a video column on Journalistenwatch , a platform of the New Right .

reception

The media scientists Stephan Weichert and Lutz Hachmeister counted Broder among the leading German journalists and opinion leaders in 2012 and 2007 respectively.

The Islamic scholar Thorsten Gerald Schneiders from the University of Münster accused Broder of Islamophobia in a philological study on argumentation techniques of German critics of Islam in 2009 . Accordingly, Broder also works in his book Hurray, We Surrender! Among other things, with a string of negative examples, stir up prejudices, operate alarmism and abuse criticism.

Taking Broder's example, a dissertation in 2001 put forward the thesis that the discourse about Jews in Germany was and will mostly be left to German and non-German Jews themselves. Conversely, the interest in Jewish culture and its resumption in Germany, which Broder serves in a variety of ways and also caricatures , is much more important than with other minorities.

The global warming controversy called Broder in 2007, "a sort of field service of the infidels who have come together in faith to the end of the world."

At the award of the honorary award of the German-Israeli Society (DIG) in Aachen 2011, Broder polemicized against the “alternative peace-moving red pack” and described a. a. the Israeli peace activist Reuven Moskovitz as "useful idiots of the left". The speech was described by the Aachener Nachrichten as "undifferentiated brutal criticism".

The media journalist Stefan Niggemeier criticized Broder for bringing "the publicists he despised close to SS officers" after the rampage in Munich in 2016 by quoting a Himmler speech , because in his opinion they were "not brutal enough judged the Munich gunman ”. The taz also states that Broder's media criticism is increasingly targeting everything “that is not right-wing conservative or new right-wing journalism ”, and only “just barely misses the narrative of the ' lying press '”.

Various observers such as the publicist Dieter Bartetzko (FAZ) and the Vice President of the European Parliament Rainer Wieland (CDU) accuse him of “ populism ”. In May 2014, Broder received the Europa-Thistle 2013 negative prize from the Europa-Union for his “primarily unobjective and polemical criticism of Europe ” in the book The Last Days of Europe , which was published in 2013.

In response to the speculation of two editors in the Tagesspiegel that among the victims of the sexual assault on New Year's Eve 2015/16 “there may also be women” who were not victims at all, but merely wanted to trigger deportations through advertisements, Broder replied that it was there are also women who think “with their tails”, and wished the authors that they would be invited by IS men “to Raqqa to experience what rape culture means”. He triggered outrage among colleagues, including within the Springer publishing house , whose daily newspaper Die Welt Broders Polemik had appeared. Its editor-in-chief, Stefan Aust , said that Broder's statement “taken out of context” seemed at least tasteless, but in the overall context it was to be understood as “part of a bitter comment on the inhuman trivialization” of the events in Cologne.

Controversy

Jakob Augstein

In September 2012, Broder described Jakob Augstein as "flawless anti-Semites" because of his statements about the policy of the Israeli government in various media because he projected anti-Semitic resentment onto Israel. Augstein commented on this accusation of anti-Semitism in a Spiegel Online column in November 2012 as "inflationary use" and an abuse that was harmful to the cause. In the further course of the debate Broder apologized for his "dramatizations", but maintained his other criticism of Augstein. Augstein's passages of text criticized by the Simon Wiesenthal Center were discussed controversially.

Claudia Roth

In contributions to The Axis of the Good , Broder repeatedly addressed the Green politician Claudia Roth . In 2010, Broder commented on Roth's trip to Iran and the fact that he had seen it there with a headscarf, with the insinuation: “The woman would have come back from Theresienstadt and would have said we had to subsidize the theater there. I think that's absolutely weird. ”In 2015, Broder assessed that Roth“ made it to Vice President of the Bundestag with a mixture of stupidity and overconfidence ”. At the beginning of 2016, on the occasion of a contribution to the debate on the sexual assault on New Year's Eve 2015/16 , he described Roth as a "quintal of stupidity made flesh, built close to the water and full of compassion for himself".

In October 2019 Broder sued Roth, who said after the attack in Halle (Saale) in 2019 :

“Words quickly become deeds. We have to name the keywords, all these new right-wing platforms whose business model is based on agitation and false claims - from Roland Tichy to Henryk M. Broder to blogs that are clearly right-wing extremists. "

Broder wanted the partial statement concerning him that his “business model is based on agitation and false assertions” to be prohibited by an injunction . On May 8, 2020, the Dresden Higher Regional Court dismissed the complaint in writing in the second instance and judged the statement to be a permissible expression of opinion with a true core of facts. To this end, the court referred to several texts by Broder, including his designation of Roth as “quintals of stupidity incarnate”. This could "easily be classified as 'agitation'", not just as a "colorful representation", as Broder wanted to understand. The statement has crossed the line of abusive criticism . In addition, the court classified two of Broder's allegations as objectively untrue to the disadvantage of Roth: with his statement that she “ stayed in Tehran on Holocaust Remembrance Day ”, he wanted to discredit her, as Iran is known to strive to destroy Israel. His statement that Roth “is on a study visit on climate change in the South Seas” is just as wrong. A satirical intention does not change the objective untruth. Broder also has to accept sharp reactions in the public discourse in the event of severe attacks; Roth then had a “right to counterattack” with “correspondingly gross counter-statements in the press”. Previously, Roland Tichy had failed with an injunction against Roth's testimony.

honors and awards

In 1986 Broder received the main prize of the 5th International Journalism Competition in Klagenfurt for the political satire Das 12th Bundesland . In 2005 the Schubart Literature Prize of the city of Aalen followed.

In January 2007, Broder was awarded the Golden Prometheus by the media magazine ViSdP for his online journalism .

Acceptance speech for the 2007 Börne Prize

On June 24, 2007, Broder received the Ludwig Börne Prize endowed with 20,000 euros in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt . Focus editor Helmut Markwort , who had been named the sole juror and laudator for 2007 by the Frankfurter Börnepreisstiftung (as is usual for the Börnepreis), had chosen Broder. The decision for Markwort as juror as well as his selection by Broder provoked protests. Alfred Grosser criticized Markwort and Broder as not worthy of the Börnepreis and an award in the Paulskirche.

On September 13, 2008, Broder was awarded the Hildegard von Bingen Prize for Journalism .

The asteroid (236800) Broder (provisional designation 2007 QU 3 ) is named after Broder .

On December 18, 2011, Broder received the honorary award of the German-Israeli Society in Aachen.

In 2012 he received the Bavarian TV Prize for the TV program Entweder Broder - Die Deutschland-Safari together with Hamed Abdel-Samad .

On June 4, 2013, Broder told Die Welt that he would return his Börne Prize because the designated award winner for 2013, the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk , described the attacks of September 11, 2001 as a "minor incident" and therefore frivolous in Broder's eyes Art "downplayed terror and mass murder".

Broder refused to accept the 2018 Johann Heinrich Voss Prize for Literature and Politics after criticism of the award of the prize for “Humanism, Enlightenment, Humanity and Freedom” had been raised.

On May 28, 2018, Broder received the Scopus Award from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .
