Stephan Weichert (born July 16, 1973 in Trier ) is a German media and communication scientist .

Life

Weichert studied sociology, journalism and psychology and received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 2006 with a dissertation on September 11th on German television. He was a research assistant at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Hamburg and at the Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research. Weichert is a board member of the Cover Association - Association for Media and Journalism Criticism eV , which operates the online magazine Vocer . In 2008 and 2009 Weichert was a juror for the Adolf Grimme Prize . In the summer of 2008 he was also a FAZIT Foundation fellow and visiting fellow at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University / New York, where he spent several weeks researching the future of newspapers.

Until the end of 2019, Weichert was the head of the degree program Digital Journalism (Executive Master of Arts in Journalism) and the associated Master's degree at the Hamburg Media School . Since 2010 he has been the managing director of the Weizenbaum Institute for Media and Journalism Research (WIMJ). From 2005 to 2009 he worked at the Berlin Institute for Media and Communication Policy in Berlin, among other things as a project manager of the research focus “Quality Journalism and Prestige Press” and editor-in-chief of the “Jahrbuch Fernsehen”.

Stephan Weichert also worked as the regional course director for journalism at the Macromedia University for Media and Communication in Hamburg.
