Gert Franz-Joseph von Paczensky and Tenczin (born August 21, 1925 in Hausneindorf ; † August 1, 2014 in Cologne ) was a German journalist , writer and gastronomy critic .

Life

After attending school and gaining a war school leaving certificate, Gert von Paczensky was a soldier in the air intelligence service from 1942 to 1945 . In 1946 he began his journalistic activities as a reporter for the German General News Agency (DANA) in Stuttgart, later became editor of the DANA headquarters in Bad Nauheim and then headed the DANA city service in Berlin. From 1947 on he worked for Die Welt (correspondent in London 1949–1952, in Paris until 1957, then head of the “Foreign Policy” department). Since then, Paczensky has been one of the few West German journalists, along with Bernt Engelmann , who took a positive position on the Algerian War of Independence and did not represent the widespread pro-French position.

From 1960 Paczensky worked for the NDR , where he founded the television magazine " Panorama " in 1961 together with Rüdiger Proske . Because of numerous reports critical of the government in this program (e.g. about Franz Josef Strauss in connection with the Fibag affair and the Spiegel affair ), his contract with NDR was no longer extended in 1963.

Paczensky was deputy editor-in-chief of Stern in 1963/1964 . At the end of 1965, together with Bernt Engelmann, he founded a publishing house in Hamburg , in which the magazine Deutsches Panorama appeared from the beginning of 1966 (discontinued in 1967 due to financial problems). Paczensky was editor-in-chief at Radio Bremen for a short time in 1969/1970 and then again since 1973 , where he also worked temporarily as a co-host on the talk show 3 to 9 . From March 1972 to August 1973 he was head of the “Fundamental Issues, Internal Affairs and Justice” section of the Federal Press Office , where Conrad Ahlers had appointed him temporarily . At the Saarbrücken congress of the Association of German Writers (VS) he was elected to the federal executive board, to which he was a member from 1984 to 1987.

Since 1950 he has dealt with problems in the “Third World” in articles, radio broadcasts, television films and books, and in the 1970s in particular he wrote several books that dealt critically with colonialism and economic exploitation . In 1994 he successfully sued the Hamburg Higher Regional Court against the characterization as a "left anti-Semite" by the publicist Henryk M. Broder .

Paczensky also wrote popular and influential restaurant reviews. As an employee of the magazine eat & drink , he reported for several decades from the top German and French gastronomy and campaigned for the improvement of the dining culture in German countries. In this phase he - according to a connoisseur of the scene - "elevated restaurant criticism to fine art". His books on cognac and champagne became standard works internationally. Since 1985 he was an honorary citizen of the city of Cognac . He was a member of the PEN Center Germany .
