history

3 to 9 is broadcast from Bremen , for the first time on November 19, 1974. The start of III to 9 , because the name was not changed until years later, as was the concept, ran in the joint third television program of NDR and Radio Bremen and (at that time still) SFB . The “III” also meant that three moderators were present at the same time, so that the actors, invited and audience alike, could choose the one that was most convenient for them and vice versa.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the show, the Frankfurter Rundschau wrote: “In the first few years, it was decided on a case-by-case basis when the end credits would begin - in close proximity to the moderators and the audience, because the directors and editors were and were right in the studio every now and then also to be seen in the picture. ”The FR author continues:“ The production conditions were made visible, and this transparency alone was in a medium that sought to perfect the illusion, at least in the entertainment sector ”of an extraordinary nature - the program became perceived as unconventional, unematic and spontaneous.

This new format was based entirely on an idea from the then newly appointed RB program director Dieter Ertel . He, as a pioneer of television documentary film received journalistic honor at the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart, wanted an "anti-magazine", live and immediate, alive with surprises and the presence of mind of those involved. The television format of the "talk show", which was freshly imported from the USA at the time, was by no means adopted. This editorial team followed their very own ideas - others called the result a "talk show".

The journalistic television review was unanimously enthusiastic about it. The jury members of the Grimme Prize awarded Alfred Mensack and Michael Leckebusch their bronze award in 1976 . In 2004, Harald Keller assessed the appearance completely differently: “… 3 to 9 is an insignificant personality talk show among many. If controversies arise between the guests, the moderators Amelie Fried and Giovanni di Lorenzo often stifle them for the sake of a harmonious chat. "

Moderators

Tribe moderators over the course of 30 years were:

From February 26, 2010, di Lorenzo moderated the following six programs with changing co-moderators. These were Sandra Maischberger , Annette Dasch , Maria Furtwängler , Katrin Bauerfeind , Judith Rakers and Sarah Wiener . On May 13, 2011, Margot Käßmann replaced Judith Rakers, who was needed for the Eurovision Song Contest , on the show. For the 40th anniversary on November 14, 2014, Maria Furtwängler conducted the show alongside Rakers and di Lorenzo.

The pianist Gottfried Böttger accompanied 3 to 9 from the first broadcast with improvisations on the piano. In recent years, he has spent the breaks in between chatting with the television viewers . After 40 years, Böttger said goodbye to the show in the anniversary edition.

Trivia

On March 9, 1984, the brothel boss Karl-Heinz Germersdorf from Hanover was a guest on the talk show together with his third Thai wife and his lawyer. He fought a verbal battle with the politician Herta Däubler-Gmelin and the feminist and author Gerlinde Schilcher . Schilcher threw a glass of wine on Germersdorf's neck during the program. The talk show became known as the "Thai Girl Scandal".

Another sensation was aroused when on February 19, 1982, among other things, the former leading member of the June 2 movement Fritz Teufel and the then Federal Minister of Finance Hans Matthöfer (SPD) were guests on the show. During a discussion with the moderator about good behavior, Teufel drew a water pistol and splashed the minister with magic ink. Matthöfer responded by pouring a glass of wine over the devil.

The program on June 22, 1990 included Franz Schönhuber , who had recently resigned from the Republican party leadership . In front of the glass studio, demonstrators tried to prevent Schönhuber from appearing, at times stones were thrown against the windows of the studio (which broke a window) and the broadcast was interrupted. Meanwhile, peaceful demonstrators held signs criticizing Schönhuber on the windows. The studio itself was shielded by police units. At times, because of these circumstances, discussions were held with guests and, in some cases, viewers within the program as to whether and to what extent the current program could be continued in this situation. Some of the demonstrators also had their say. The singer Anja Silja , also a guest, left the show early due to the unclear situation.

In 2009, Middle East expert and journalist Peter Scholl-Latour and Israeli public relations manager Melody Sucharewicz clashed in a heated discussion. The point of contention was the Israeli Gaza war , which had just flared up. Scholl-Latour felt, so literally, "lured into a trap" and wrongly pushed into an anti-Israel corner that he would not represent. He had previously criticized Israel's policy on Palestine; Sucharewicz vehemently contradicted this. The moderators di Lorenzo and Fried were later publicly criticized for their passivity and their behavior towards Scholl-Latour.
