The Fibag affair hit the headlines in 1961/62.

The news magazine Der Spiegel reported in 1961, German Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss had his US colleague Thomas S. Gates , the company Fibag recommended (Finanzbau Aktiengesellschaft) to several thousand apartments for those in the Federal Republic US Army to build. The conservative Passau publisher Hans Kapfinger and Friedrich Zimmermann as trustee, Strauss himself, were involved in Fibag . Strauss was accused of taking advantage in office because his friend Kapfinger held shares in Fibag . At the request of the SPD and the FDP , the allegation was investigated by a parliamentary committee of inquiry . In 1962, with a narrow majority, he came to the conclusion that Strauss was not to blame for any misconduct. The FDP, which was a partner in the government coalition, criticized this heavily.

The deal between Fibag and the US Army did not materialize.

The Fibag affair, together with other affairs ( Starfighter affair , Spiegel affair ), resulted in Strauss having to resign from the office of Federal Defense Minister in 1962.
