Rupert Neudeck
Rupert Neudeck (born May 14, 1939 in Danzig ; † May 31, 2016 in Siegburg ) was a German journalist , co-founder of the organization Cap Anamur / German emergency doctors and chairman of the Grünhelme Peace Corps . Neudeck became known worldwide in 1979 through the rescue of thousands of Vietnamese refugees (so-called " boat people ") in the China Sea with the Cap Anamur .
life and work
As a child, Neudeck had to flee from Danzig-Langfuhr at the end of January 1945 with his mother, three brothers and his sister . The escape was supposed to take place with the Wilhelm Gustloff , but the family missed the port, which saved her life as the ship was torpedoed and sank . Neudeck spent his childhood in the Westphalian city of Hagen and passed his Abitur in 1958 at the local Fichte-Gymnasium , where his father Edmund worked as a math and physics teacher.
After graduating from high school , he studied philosophy , German , sociology and Catholic theology . In 1961 he broke off his studies and joined the Jesuit order . After leaving the order, he resumed his studies and graduated in 1970. In 1972 he was at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster with the work Political Ethics in Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus Doctor of Philosophy PhD .
From 1969–1971 he worked as a student editor for Semesterspiegel . In 1971 Neudeck began as a full-time journalist for the Catholic Funk-Korrespondenz in Cologne , then in 1976 he switched to free journalism. In 1977 he became editor at Deutschlandfunk , Political Feature Department .
On the occasion of the great hardship of Vietnamese refugees in the South China Sea, he founded the A Ship for Vietnam Committee together with his wife Christel Neudeck and with the support of the writer Heinrich Böll in 1979 . In 1982 it became the aid organization Cap Anamur / Deutsche Not-Ärzte e. V. It was named after the freighter Cap Anamur , with which the crew around Rupert Neudeck picked up a total of 10,375 Vietnamese refugees, the so-called boat people , and brought them to Germany . Numerous other aid missions with the Cap Anamur followed .
“I never want to be a coward again. Cap Anamur is the most beautiful result of the German desire to never be cowardly again, but always to be courageous. "
Until 1998 he was a member of the board of directors of the Cap Anamur committee, after which he became spokesman for the aid organization. In April 2003 he became (together with Aiman Mazyek ) the co-founder and chairman of the international peace corps Grünhelme e. V. Neudeck saw it as a mandate to get involved in Islamic countries, to make Islam known and to reduce fears of Islam. For him, “Islamist” or “radical Islamic” actually meant something positive: also taking seriously the humanity that must go hand in hand with faith. Therefore the color green as the “color of Islam”, analogous to the blue helmets of the United Nations.
From 2002 Neudeck traveled several times to Israel and the Palestinian Autonomous Territories to find out, as he announced, about the Israeli barriers and the situation of the Palestinians there. With the resulting publication I don't want to be silent anymore. According to his own admission, he wanted to protest law and justice in Palestine against the Israeli human rights violations he had accused , a new “ apartheid ” and the “monstrous wall” and, with warnings of a “friendship trap Israel”, he also rejected the Federal Republic's previous military support for Israel . This met with some clear criticism.
In June 2010, Neudeck criticized Israel's approach to granting building permits and demolishing houses in the West Bank . The occasion was the notice of demolition of a vocational training center between Bethlehem and Hebron, built by the Grünhelme organization and well known in Germany . According to Neudeck, it is generally not possible for Palestinians in this area (Zone C, which comprises around 60% of the West Bank) to obtain a building permit, while the Jewish settlements around the area in question continued to expand.
Rupert Neudeck was a member of the advisory board of the Society for Threatened Peoples , together with his wife Christel a member of the board of trustees of the Society of Friends of Abraham and an official supporter of the demonstration Freedom instead of Fear .
Rupert Neudeck died on May 31, 2016 as a result of heart surgery . He was buried in the cemetery of the Spich district of the city of Troisdorf in the Rhein-Sieg district .
Rupert Neudeck's legacy was received in 2017 by the Documentation Center and Museum on Migration in Germany (DOMiD) in Cologne.
