Aiman A. Mazyek (born January 19, 1969 in Aachen ) is chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany .

Life

The son of a Syrian and a German studied Arabic studies in Cairo after graduating from high school in 1989 and philosophy , economics and political science in Aachen from 1992 to 1997 (MA). From 1993 to 1998 he also completed a series of Islamic studies with scholars and theologians. Since 1994 he has been a member of the General Assembly of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany. From 2001 to 2004 he was press spokesman for the Central Council, and from 2006 he was its general secretary. In September 2010 he prevailed in the election of the new chairman of the Central Council against the previous chairman Ayyub Köhler with 9 to 6 votes with one abstention.

From 2001 to 2007 Mazyek was chairman of the FDP city association Alsdorf and in 2004 candidate for mayor. At the end of 2010, his FDP membership was suspended before he left, as he rejected the FDP's position on the headscarf ban , stricter security laws and the award of the FDP-related freedom prize to the social scientist and Islamic critic Necla Kelek .

Together with Rupert Neudeck , Mazyek founded the aid organization Grünhelme eV in 2003 and is a member of the organization's board. In April 2007 he was the first speaker of the Islamic Word on the SWR website, which is a Muslim counterpart to the Christian Word on Sunday . Mazyek is also intensively involved in Christian-Islamic dialogue and is a member of the Christian-Islamic Society . Aiman Mazyek was editor-in-chief until 2010 and is now the editor of the web portal islam.de.

Mazyek was a consultant and played a xenophobic police officer for the television drama The Sleeper's Wife, which aired in November 2010 . For the 2011 Galileo documentary Mekka - In the footsteps of the Prophet, he acted as a consultant for content and script. The film achieved an audience rate of 13.8% and also became an internet hit.

Mazyek is married for the second time and has five children.

Viewpoints

Mazyek does not consider the hijab and headscarf necessary for Muslim women or the wearing of a beard for Muslims. He advocates religious tolerance among Muslims, with reference to the 256th verse of the Koran of the second sura “ No coercion in religion ”. Mazyek commented on this in an interview with the weekly newspaper Die Zeit :

“In the historical context of early Islam, conversion was equated with desertion . That no longer applies today. The Koran verse "No compulsion in faith" must not be relativized. Ultimately, this means that one can - worldly speaking - change one's faith with impunity or have none. "

After the 2010 Potsdam Media Prize was awarded to the Danish Mohammed cartoonist Kurt Westergaard , who was threatened with death several times by radical Islamists , Mazyek criticized the award ceremony. With his drawings, Westergaard "trampled our prophet underfoot" in our eyes. He stood for unrestricted freedom of the press, but at the same time demanded consideration for the feelings of religious people.

In the social debate that has been taking place since June 2012 about a judgment by the Cologne Regional Court on the circumcision of a four-year-old boy for religious reasons , Mayzek told Focus that his organization was currently examining “to set a precedent” and to bring the case to the Federal Constitutional Court via the courts .

The chairman of Deutsche Kinderhilfe criticized this:

“The announcement that a precedent would be set could well be seen as a call for a criminal offense in the sense of the legally binding Cologne judgment. It is ethically questionable and not justifiable to have a child circumcised in a targeted manner, not only for religious reasons, but now also for tactical lobbying reasons. "

In an article in the newspaper Neues Deutschland about the controversial low-budget anti-Islamic film Innocence of Muslims and the protests and riots that followed, Mazyek said:

“The film is obviously aimed at pure provocation and escalation. But the attempt has been so badly made that I personally never recognize the honored prophet Mohammed . Nevertheless, I share the demand by Federal Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich for a legal examination whether the staging of a right-wing party that wants to show the film publicly can be prevented. "

In 2012, Mazyek demanded that “Islamophobic racism should be viewed as an independent offense” instead of being subsumed under the umbrella term xenophobia by the government and security authorities as before, since current practice “obscures the dimension of Islamophobia”. In addition, Mazyek also called for an annual report on racism in order to combat Islamophobia in Germany that extends “right into the middle of society”.

On the occasion of a nationwide day of action by Muslim religious communities in Germany against extremism and violence, Mazyek said in 2014:

"I am a Jew when synagogues are attacked, I am a Christian when Christians are persecuted in Iraq , for example , and I am a Muslim when incendiary devices are thrown at their places of worship."

In Sandra Maischberger's panel discussion , which was about the events of New Year's Eve in Cologne and in which criminologist Christian Pfeiffer also took part, he said the following:

"To be honest, mass rape or attempts at it in the Muslim world, that's really a wives' tale."

Mazyek considers Sharia law to be compatible with democracy. But polemical critics would falsely present it as an anti-system to democracy. The publicist and Islamic critic Ralph Giordano , who died at the end of 2014, criticized Mazyek in September 2010 for declaring in front of the cameras that Sharia law and the Basic Law are compatible.

On the one hand he rejects homosexuality for religious and personal reasons, on the other hand he also rejects homophobia .
