The Christian-Islamic Society e. V. (CIG eV) is a Christian - Islamic dialogue organization in Germany. The association is based in Cologne .

History and self-image

The association was founded in 1982 as the "Christian-Islamic Society of North Rhine-Westphalia". In 1989 the organizational area was expanded and the addition " North Rhine-Westphalia " was deleted.

According to its self-portrayal, the CIG wants to be a place and instrument for encounters between Christians and Muslims . There should be loyalty to one's own identity and a claim to the right to preserve this identity, but at the same time there should be a willingness to better understand and accept each other's religion , culture and mentality . What they have in common should be emphasized and what is different should be explained, if possible, in such a way that they are no longer perceived as dividing. This is where the CIG deliberately differs from multicultural organizations, which exclude religious differences and similarities from their work.

The CIG sees itself as a “minority advocate” for both the Muslim minority in Germany and the Christian minorities in Islamic countries. Aside from Christians and Muslims, Jews can also become members of the CIG . The current chairwoman of the society is the Muslim Karin Karima El Zein , managing director of Christ Thomas Lemmen .

The society is a founding member of the Coordinating Council of the Christian-Islamic Dialogue .

Honor

The CIG was the 2010 winner of the Active for Democracy and Tolerance Award of the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance for its emergency pastoral care project for and with Muslims .
