Thomas Lemmen

Thomas Lemmen (* 1962 in Würselen (then Aachen district , today Aachen city region )) is a German Roman Catholic theologian .

career

Lemmen studied Catholic theology with a specialization in mission theology in Bonn and Sankt Augustin as well as Islamic studies in Bonn . He holds a degree and licentiate in Catholic theology. Lemmen is a member of the Dominican lay community . In 1985/86 he was active in Nigeria .

After working in foreigners and refugee work, Lemmen began in 1991 with his academic work on Christian-Islamic dialogue . From 1992 he headed an integration project for Muslim families in Dormagen and from 1995 to 1996 he worked in the department for interreligious dialogue of the Archdiocese of Cologne (REFIDI). In 2000 he received his doctorate in St. Augustin with a dissertation on Muslims in Germany. A challenge for church and society ( summa cum laude ). From 2003 to 2007 Lemmen was a full-time consultant for Islam issues in the Federal Ministry of the Interior . Since 2007 he has been a consultant for Islam issues in the Dialogue and Annunciation department of the Archdiocese of Cologne (REFIDI). In 2010 Lemmen was appointed as a lecturer at the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne. In the 2018 summer semester, this university appointed him honorary professor .

In 2014 Lemmen received the German Dialogue Prize from the Federation of German Dialogue Institutions (BDDI) for its commitment to interreligious dialogue .

Thomas Lemmen is married to the Islamic scholar and former Christian KCID chairman Melanie Miehl .

Volunteering

Since the mid-1990s, Lemmen has been involved in the Christian-Islamic Society , the oldest and largest Christian-Islamic organization in Germany. After being its deputy chairman for a few years, he has been its ( honorary ) managing director since 2001 . The Christian-Islamic Society is a founding member of the Coordination Council of the Christian-Islamic Dialogue . In 2008 Lemmen was elected as its Christian chairman, and he held this position until 2010. Lemmen was also a member of the working group "Religions and Religious Freedom. Human Rights Perspectives for Politics and Church" of the German Commission Justitia et Pax .
