Building of the St. Augustin University (2013)

The Cologne University of Catholic Theology (KHKT) is a state and church-recognized university with the right to award doctorates and sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cologne , which the university took over as sponsor in February 2020. Until then it belonged as a religious college to the Steyler Missionaries (SVD), to whose mission seminary in Sankt Augustin it was affiliated, and until the change of sponsor it was called the Philosophical-Theological University SVD St. Augustin (PTH) . In June 2020, the sponsor, the Archdiocese of Cologne, announced that the university at the Sankt Augustin location would be closed and relocated to the Cologne - Lindenthal location for the summer semester 2021 .

history

The beginnings of the university go back to 1925. It was then that the Order's first candidates for priesthood began studying philosophy at the university. In 1932 he started studying theology in the narrower sense. Since the 1970s, the university has also been open to non-religious students. The university was officially recognized in 1983.

Whether the Steyler missionaries can continue to carry the university or not has been discussed internally since the end of 2015. In July 2019, the Archdiocese of Cologne announced that it would take over the sponsorship of the university in order to prevent its closure. At the beginning of the 2019/20 winter semester, Christoph Ohly was appointed Acting Rector of the PTH to shape the next steps in the change of sponsor . This also includes new statutes for the university. The appointment was made by the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome in agreement with the Steyler missionaries and the Archdiocese of Cologne. The change in staff was initially controversial within the university, as the term of office of Ohly's predecessor Peter Ramers had been extended beyond 2019 by the university's senate before the change of sponsor. Since the necessary confirmation from Rome was not available, Ramers' term of office ended on September 30, 2019.

The change of carrier was officially completed on February 1, 2020. Since then, the university has been operated by the gGmbH "Cologne University for Catholic Theology (KHKT) - St. Augustin", whose sole shareholder is the Foundation for the Promotion of Education, Science and Research in the Archdiocese of Cologne . Martina Köppen , who had previously headed the Catholic office in Berlin-Brandenburg, was elected Chancellor of the university . The university's grand chancellor is Archbishop Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki from Cologne .

In the summer semester of 2021, the university will start studying in the premises of a former vocational college of the Archdiocese of Cologne on Gleueler Strasse in Cologne's Lindenthal district - right next to Krieler Dömchen - which are being renovated for the university. It is hoped that the Cologne location will improve the infrastructure for the further development of the university and facilitate cooperation with scientific and cultural institutions.

Range of courses and scientific institutions

The university is the only one in Germany that offers a major in “Mission, Cultures and Religions” in the Master’s degree in Catholic Theology . The former Steyler University teaches missions and related sciences such as ethnology, religious studies and religious history. The Master’s degree in Catholic Theology was re-accredited unconditionally by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Canonical Degree Programs in Germany (AKAST) until September 2022. A licentiate and doctorate are possible as postgraduate courses . Further courses are the “Theological Additional Qualification for Students and Employees in Social Work” and the extra-occupational Master’s course “Interreligious Dialogue Competence”. The PTH realizes this master’s course together with the Archdiocese of Cologne , the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Diocesan Caritas Association in the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The university has an international character, around 50 percent of the students and almost a third of the lecturers are of non-German origin. Non-religious men and women make up the majority of students today.

The study Campus in Sankt Augustin with the large green area was home to more scientific institutes in addition to the university and its library: the Divine Word Mission Research Institute , the ethnological Anthropos Institute and the Sinology Institute Monumenta Serica .
