Peter Ramers CSSp (born July 2, 1954 in Iserlohn ) is a German religious priest (Spiritaner), Roman Catholic theologian and religious scholar .

Life

Peter Ramers has been a member of the Mission Society of the Holy Spirit ( Spiritans ) since 1974 . He studied philosophy and theology at the Philosophical-Theological College SVD St. Augustin der Steyler Missionare . The licentiate he acquired for mission theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm , the International College of the Benedictine order in Rome . From 1986 he completed his doctorate in comparative religious studies, Indology , Tibetology , Mongolian Studies and Manchurian Studies at the University of Bonn .

He was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . Since 1996 he has taught at the Philosophical-Theological College of the Steyler Missionaries in Sankt Augustin as a lecturer, lecturer (1998) and since 2001 professor for religious studies, religious philosophy and the history of philosophy. From 2004 he was Vice Rector of his university.

In October 2018 he was appointed rector of the Philosophical-Theological University SVD. Ramers was the first rector of the Sankt Augustin University who did not belong to the Steyler missionaries. During his term of office, preparations were made to change the sponsorship of the university to the Archdiocese of Cologne . Ramers was replaced by Christoph Ohly at the beginning of the 2019/20 winter semester , who should complete this process. The driving force behind his dismissal, which was not agreed with the university committees, was Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki from Cologne , who welcomed the change and, according to observers, is planning a realignment of the university after the departure of the Steyler missionaries, closely following the church-political line of the Archdiocese. After Ramers initially assumed that he would be able to stay as professor at the university under the new sponsorship immediately after losing the office of rector, his name was deleted from the list of lecturers after the Archdiocese of Cologne finally took over the facility in February 2020 .

Ramers' main research interests are intercultural philosophy, Buddhology , coinobitic and hermitic forms of life in world religions, Martin Heidegger's relationship to Asia and Goethe's relationship to religion . In intercultural and interreligious relationships , he advocates a “dialogue of spiritualities” which, in “holy competition”, must be characterized by mutual appreciation and respect, and in which the religious communities play a prophetic pioneering role on the Catholic side .
