Brigitte Proksch

Brigitte Maria Anna Proksch (born May 5, 1962 in Vienna) is an Austrian theologian.

Life

Brigitte Proksch studied theology in Vienna and Birmingham , did her doctorate at the Institute for Eastern Church Theology, Ecumenism and Patristic Theology in Graz and worked from 1985 to 2003 in various positions at the Afro-Asian Institute in Vienna and in the rectorate of the Catholic communities from Africa , Asia and Latin America in Vienna, a section of the migrant pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Vienna . A particular focus of her work was the academic and spiritual training of Catholic priests from overseas in Austriaas well as intercultural and interreligious dialogue . In East Africa and Asia she gained world church experience through project trips and contacts with Catholic dioceses and Orthodox churches and was able to prepare and promote the development of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Austria through relationships with the Orthodox Patriarchate in Addis Ababa .

In 2003, the Jesuit order concluded an association agreement with Proksch, whereby she made herself available to the order. She was subsequently appointed prefect in the Collegium Canisianum in Innsbruck and also for ecumenism in the Cardinal König Haus in Vienna. In 2004 she was appointed by John Paul II as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move (Pontificium Consilium de Spirituali Migrantium atque Itinerantium Cura). Proksch was active in the worldwide Ignatian network (Ignatian Associates) until 2010 and has been involved in the Pallottine family (Unione Dell´Apostolato Catolico) from 2011. As the first woman in the leadership team of a Roman Catholic seminary , the Canisianum, she became ´head of the day´ in the Austrian daily Der Standard on November 11, 2004. The Canisianum, which until 2007 was an international seminary run by Jesuits, was primarily dedicated to the training of candidates for priesthood and the further training of priests from all over the world, especially from Africa, Asia and South America. In 2007 the seminar was closed, the house continued as a study house for postgraduate studies (priests).

Since carrying out a research project on Vinzenz Pallotti on behalf of the Sacred Heart Province of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate, she has been working for the province and became a member of the Unio in 2017. Since 2019 she has been chairwoman of the Unio Austria and also works as a retreat guide. She is involved in the international Religions for Peace (RfP, also WCRP) network at the European level (member of the Governing Board, at times also Vice-President) and at the Austrian level, and has also been the Chairperson in Austria since 2016.

Scientific activities

Since 2010 Proksch has been the chief editor of the journal Religionen on the way of the Forum for World Religions and, together with Petrus Bsteh , Peter Ramers and Hans Waldenfels, she is co-editor of the book series "Spirituality in Dialog"; since 2014 she has been the managing director of the Forum for World Religions . Her main research interests are in the area of ​​ecumenism and patristicism, especially in Ethiopia (Ethiopian monasticism in the late Middle Ages), research on Vincent Pallotti and the Second Vatican Council ( ecclesiology ), study trips to East Africa and Asia.
