Christoph Ohly

Christoph Ohly (born September 28, 1966 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German clergyman and Roman Catholic canon lawyer .

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Bonn for two years . As an alumnus of the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe , he continued these studies from 1987 to 1990 at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in Rome . On May 5, 1990, he was ordained deacon in Il Gesù (Rome) for the Archdiocese of Cologne . After that he spent a practical year as a deacon in the parish of St. Patricius in Eitorf . After his return to Rome he received the ordination as a priest on October 10, 1991 in Sant'Ignazio di Loyola in Campo Marzio from Johannes Joachim Degenhardt . From 1993 to 1996 he was chaplain in the pastoral care area of ​​the parish of St. Antonius (Wuppertal) . At the beginning of the 2019/20 winter semester, Christoph Ohly was appointed acting rector of the St. Augustin University of Philosophy and Theology , which was renamed the Cologne University of Catholic Theology (KHKT) on February 1, 2020 . There he has been a full professor of canon law since April 1, 2020 . He is considered to be the preferred candidate of the Cologne Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki , who described the personality as trend-setting for the preservation of the university and Ohly as one of the "renowned theologians in Germany". For the further development of the university, which is to move from Sankt Augustin to Cologne , he relies on cooperation and refers to statements by Joseph Ratzinger on the nature of theology, which cannot speak of God as if he were a mere hypothesis of human thought.

Ohly was one of the speakers and has been chairman of the board of the new student group Joseph Ratzinger / Pope Benedict XVI, founded in 2007 with his participation . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Joseph Ratzinger Pope Benedict XVI Foundation and, together with Hanna-Barbara Gerl-Falkovitz , Karl-Heinz Menke and Christoph Binninger, forms the theological advisory board of the Catholic weekly newspaper Die Tagespost during the synodal path of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany published supplement Welt & Kirche , which wants to "take a critical look at" the course and results of the internal church reform process.
