Buddhist studies

The Buddhist Studies ( Buddhology ) is a scientific discipline that deals with the study of languages and the spiritual and material culture of Buddhism busy.

Buddhist Studies in the West explores Buddhism in terms of philology , history , philosophy , religious studies , sociology and culture .

In Germany there are researches and professorships focused on Buddhism within Indology , Tibetology , Sinology and other oriental subjects or within religious studies . Since 2010 there has been a chair for "Buddhist Studies" at the University of Heidelberg .

In many Asian countries, on the other hand, there are faculties for Buddhist studies. B. in Myanmar , India and Nepal . In the United States , as in Germany, Buddhist studies is often integrated into other subject areas, but there are also private universities that offer their own subject in Buddhist studies. The University of Wisconsin was the first university to offer MA and Ph.D programs in Buddhist Studies as early as 1965 . Masatoshi Shoshun Nagatomi (1926-2000) became the first professor for Buddhist Studies at Harvard University in 1969 .
