Kathpress (also Katholische Presseagentur ) is an Austrian news agency based in Vienna that has been producing news and reports from the area of ​​the Catholic Church in Austria since 1947. It works on behalf of the Austrian Bishops' Conference and is organized as a public corporation .

history

The Catholic Press Agency was founded in 1945 as the Catholic Press Center . It was initially an office of the pastoral office of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The Catholic press center was the successor to the Christian press center , which was dissolved in 1938 after the “ Anschluss ” of Austria .

From 1955 to 1980 Richard Barta (1911–1986) was editor-in-chief and thereafter, until his death, editor of the Catholic Press Agency. He was followed by Erich Leitenberger (* 1944), the press spokesman for the Archdiocese of Vienna.

Editor and editor

Paul Wuthe has been editor-in-chief and managing director since 2010. In addition to the editor-in-chief, the editorial team includes seven other editors.

The publisher is Cardinal Christoph Schönborn , who also acts as "media bishop" in the Austrian Bishops' Conference. Kathpress offers an agency service for media customers as well as its own media appointment service, various PDF services ("Tagesdienst", "Info-Dienst", "Wochendienst", "Ordensnews") and online services (archive, "KathIndex"). ).

Kathpress customers include Austrian newspapers, radio and television broadcasters, online media as well as numerous companies, associations, institutions and private individuals.

Center Informationis Catholicum

Together with the German Catholic News Agency KNA and the Swiss Catholic Media Center KATH.CH , Kathpress maintains a correspondent office in Rome, the Centrum Informationis Catholicum (CIC), which was founded in 1962 at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council .
