He gained notoriety primarily through his critical examination of Austrian social democracy and Austromarxism . His habilitation thesis on this subject with the title “Between Reformism and Bolshevism” is recognized as a standard work. Another concern of his was the particularly difficult rapprochement between social democracy and the Christian faith in Austria (for historical reasons) .

He is the author and editor of numerous books and articles in magazines and edited volumes. His philosophical writings include the history of political ideas, contemporary history, legal and state philosophy , Marxism and social democracy, Christianity and Catholicism , the question of God, etc.

The interdisciplinary breadth of his work, but also his importance and recognition, is particularly clear in the Festschrift published by his former colleague Erwin Bader , in which 38 well-known scientists from 16 disciplines and 14 universities from different countries contributed.

Reader died on December 31, 2014 in Eisenstadt.
