life and work

Erwin Bader was born as the son of the teacher and painter Ernst Petrus Maria Bader and the teacher Ludmilla Bader.

He first studied psychology , philosophy and zoology in Graz , then political science and legal philosophy with René Marcic in Salzburg , and later also Catholic religious education . During his studies he was active in the Association of Socialist Students of Austria ( VSStÖ ) in Graz and at the federal level.

He was a university lecturer at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Salzburg, then a religion teacher at higher schools in Vienna and, after a few years, worked as an assistant to Norbert Leser, most recently ao University professor at the Institute for Philosophy at the University of Vienna .

He is particularly interested in questions of ethics , global ethics , social and religious philosophy ( dialogue between religions ) and Christian social teaching . For a long time he worked as chairman of the University Center for Peace Research in Vienna and is now active as vice-president of the Global Ethic Austria initiative.

In retirement, Bader continues to work at the university, supervising students, writing books and essays, and giving lectures and occasionally sermons. He is married with two daughters and six grandchildren.

Scientific achievements

In addition to philosophy, Bader paid attention to interdisciplinary and international cooperation. He cooperated with numerous scientists from different disciplines. According to the judgment of the Marxism researcher Norbert Leser , Bader has "provided exact evidence that the doctrine of the withering away of the state ascribed to Marx is actually a creation of Karl Marx's comrade, namely Friedrich Engels."

Bader practiced the dialogue of religions at the University of Vienna . Many publications concern people whose importance in the scientific community has not yet been recognized. In the context of peace research , he emphasized the possibilities of creating peace on the basis of genuine neutrality, demanded that the atomic bomb be banned as a preparation for war crimes and promoted dialogue between the religions.

Other services

In addition to his scientific activity, he gained international attention by challenging the referendum on Austria's accession to the European Union at the Constitutional Court with the support of Inge Rauscher to obtain the necessary signatures and the lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights , supported by Freda Meissner-Blau . His consistent advocacy of maintaining Austria's permanent neutrality also attracted attention.
