The Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln (RFH) is a state-recognized university of applied sciences in Cologne . It offers 20 Bachelor's and 20 Master's degrees in the fields of engineering, economics and law, medical economics and media. The sponsor is the non-profit company of the same name .
history
The RFH was founded in 1971 and has its origins in the Rheinische Ingenieurschule für Bau- und Maschinenbauwesen Cologne (RIBM) founded by Gottfried Päffgen in 1958 and officially recognized in 1966 .
At the time of the conversion of the higher vocational schools into technical colleges, the city of Cologne could not offer its own teaching company for mechanical engineering. However, since it wanted to cover the full range of subjects intended for universities of applied sciences, the RIBM was supported accordingly by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the conversion so that the university framework law of the time could be fulfilled.
With currently almost 6500 students enrolled, the RFH is now one of the largest educational institutions in the city of Cologne, alongside the University of Cologne and the Technical University of Cologne.
Locations
Teaching takes place at four locations in Cologne:
- Schaevenstraße 1a / b, 50676 Cologne (head office and seminar rooms)
- Weyerstraße 41, 50676 Cologne (seminar and project rooms for media subjects)
- Lindenstrasse 16–22, 50674 Cologne (seminar rooms and library)
- Vogelsanger Straße 295, 50825 Cologne (large campus, data center, engineering laboratories and seminar rooms)
The building on Schaevenstrasse has replaced the old headquarters on Hohenstaufenring since August 2008.
A modern, energy-saving educational building has been built on the Vogelsanger Straße campus and has been available to engineering subjects since the beginning of the 2011/12 winter semester.
The RFH also has branches in the premises of the Bergisch Land vocational college in Wermelskirchen , where the part-time bachelor's degree in business administration has been offered since the 2007/08 winter semester, as well as in Schleiden , Bergheim and Geilenkirchen .
In 2015, the RFH took over the insolvent University of Neuss for International Business , which was then renamed the Rheinische Fachhochschule Neuss .

Research and Institutes
Institute for Medical Economics and Medical Services Research
The task of the institute is to provide scientific support for study and project work that is written as part of the medical economics course at the RFH. Central subject areas are process and quality management, quality assurance and health services research. The institute works in cooperation with health insurance companies, health care associations and hospitals.
Institute for Tool and Manufacturing Technology
The institute takes on various research and development tasks in the field of production technology. The main objective is to promote and strengthen the range of courses through active research and to introduce young people to scientific fields of activity. It offers the students of the RFH a variety of topics for project and theses that can be carried out both internally and as industrial projects.
Medical tools
The research project led by Wilfried Saxler works on the development and validation of a test method for assessing the operational properties of microsurgical scalpels made of innovative ceramics.
Fiber optic sensors
Under the direction of Ulrich Glombitza, a fiber-optic hybrid sensor system is being developed and tested, which is intended to enable the simultaneous measurement of variables such as strain, temperature, vibration, etc. at neighboring and distant measuring locations.
Automated learning from error information (ALaF)
The aim of the research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research is the sustainable improvement of software development processes. A method is being developed that analyzes error patterns relevant to the improvement of processes and makes them systematically usable for process improvement.
Electromobility
The RFH works as a partial network partner in the joint project "eProduction - production research on high-voltage storage systems for electric mobility" funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Within this sub-project, laser-assisted connection technologies for battery components made of plastics and metals as well as the laser-assisted marking of all battery components are to be researched.
Institute for Compliance and Corporate Governance
The institute offers research-related services in the field of compliance and corporate governance for companies as well as public organizations and support companies with a focus on compliance, corporate governance, sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Bachelor and master courses complement the offer.
European Institute for Experience and Management (METIS)
METIS is a joint research initiative of the FHWien der WKW and the Rheinische Fachhochschule Köln. The international institute carries out research projects in the field of “empirical knowledge” and ensures a transfer between science, business and society.
C³ Cologne Career Center - career center
Since 2006, the C³ Cologne Career Center has been providing professional coaching and career advice to academics in all phases of their professional careers. H. during your studies as well as throughout your entire professional career. The career services and seminars can be used by students and alumni as well as by external customers. The Cologne Career Center of the RFH specializes in career coaching and develops solutions for academic recruitment, potential and managerial development.
Alumni activities and accompanying research on career development
In addition, the RFH's alumni activities are managed in the career center. This also includes the accompanying scientific research on the career development of RFH students and graduates via the alumni network. The alumni network is a platform that enables networking among RFH graduates and students. In this way, the graduates remain connected to the university and can establish and maintain contacts on a friendly and professional basis. A search portal can be used to search specifically for friends, business contacts, thesis topics, jobs and internships. A newsletter informs about events and important information of the RFH.
Events
The RFH organizes numerous educational events, such as lecture series, the Rhenish Congress for Health Services Research, the Study Day of the Media Management Department, the Media Design Forum , the European Business Law Congress (funded by EU funds) and the Business Informatics Forum for the Business Informatics course. Many of the speakers include guests from politics, business and society such as Armin Maiwald , Peter Kloeppel and Hellmuth Karasek .
Additional qualifications
In addition to regular studies, there is the possibility of acquiring additional qualifications. There is a large number of courses for each subject area. Some courses specifically train according to industry specifications; Successful completion of the course is then certified by the relevant companies (e.g. Cisco , EPLAN , Apple ).
