The Fachhochschule Dortmund has approximately 14,000 students one of the largest colleges in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is represented at three locations (Emil-Figge-Strasse campus, Max-Ophüls-Platz campus, Sonnenstrasse campus) in Dortmund . The college is divided into eight departments: architecture, design, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, applied social sciences, economics and information technology.

The origins of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences lie in the royal master craftsman's school for mechanical engineers , which opened in today's Kreuzviertel at the Sonnenstrasse location on November 3rd, 1890.

From 1893 the educational establishment operated under the title "Royal Mechanical Engineering Schools of Dortmund" and consisted of three departments:

  • Royal Technical Middle School of Mechanical Engineering
  • Royal master craftsman school for mechanical engineers, locksmiths and blacksmiths
  • Evening and Sunday course with specialist lessons (evening school)

From 1904 the school was supplemented by design training in the subjects of architecture and design.

On April 1, 1931, another renaming took place this time in "United Technical State Schools for Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering".

In 1969, after a semester on strike, major restructuring took place - student representatives in all committees and during examinations - introduction of the subject information technology with hardware equipment of electron tube analog computers and PhyWe relay computers.

Today's Dortmund University of Applied Sciences was founded on August 1, 1971 on the basis of what was then the State Engineering School , the Dortmund Werkkunstschule and the higher technical schools for social work, social education and economics. When it was founded around 1972, a total of 2800 students were enrolled, supported by 144 professors. The number has now grown to around 14,022 students (WS 2017/18). These are supervised by 221 professors, plus 416 lecturers, 22 teachers for special tasks and 176 scientific and artistic employees.

The Ruhr Master School was founded in December 2013 by the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences, the Bochum University of Applied Sciences and the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences . This should enable the establishment of a joint master’s course at the Ruhr universities of applied sciences, the creation of a master’s school with a framework program, a diversified range of master’s courses and the simplified transition from the bachelor’s courses at the participating universities to the master’s courses at the Ruhr Master School.

The head office is located in Dortmund's Kreuzviertel ( Sonnenstrasse 96-100 ). The information and electrical engineering and mechanical engineering departments are located at this location. The design department is also located in the Kreuzviertel ( Max-Ophüls-Platz 2 ).

The largest location is on the north campus of the Technical University of Dortmund . The departments of architecture, computer science, applied social sciences and economics ( Emil-Figge-Str. 40, 42, 44 ) have their place here, where the vast majority of students can be found.
