The Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences founded in 2009 . The educational institution was opened in the winter semester of 2009/10 and was originally supposed to be called Fachhochschule Nördlicher Niederrhein . The university has its headquarters in Kleve and a second campus in Kamp-Lintfort .

The German river Rhine and the Dutch river Waal give the university its name. The areas between these two rivers have merged to form the Euregio Rhine-Waal . The Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences is part of this association.

history

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia was awarded a competition for the establishment of three new colleges on 28 May, 2008. Although the Kleve district on one side and the “We-4” cities ( Kamp-Lintfort , Moers , Neukirchen-Vluyn and Rheinberg ) applied separately, the municipalities' concepts were rejected when the location was awarded. Instead, on November 28, 2008 the previously competing applicants Kleve and Kamp-Lintfort were awarded the contract by the responsible state cabinet Rüttgers for a bipolar university.

Several factors played a role in the location decision. In Kamp-Lintfort, for example, BenQ Mobile went bankrupt in 2006 , while the former Alltours administration building in Kleve was empty and ready for use. The building of a former army barracks in Emmerich am Rhein could be used as an interim campus.

On April 30, 2009, Marie-Louise Klotz became President and Martin Goch became Vice-President for Economic and Personnel Administration at the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences. The date of foundation was May 1, 2009.

For the 2009/2010 winter semester, students were able to enroll in the first three courses International Business and Social Sciences , Bio Science and Health in Kleve and E-Government in Kamp-Lintfort, which can optionally be carried out as a dual course of study . While there were around 650 students in the 2011 summer semester, enrollments in the 2011 winter semester increased to around 1,500 students.

In the four faculties of technology and bionics , life sciences and society and economics on the Kleve campus and communication and environment (Kamp-Lintfort campus), 22 further new bachelor's and eleven master's programs have since been launched. The university offers 36 courses that are taught either in German or in English (75 percent of the courses).

In mid-2012, the university set up an official TV teaching editorial team, funded by the State Agency for Media in North Rhine-Westphalia . Students from various departments have the opportunity to create their own television programs here, which are then broadcast nationwide on the nrwision TV learning channel.

Although the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences was designed for 5,000 students, it has had more than 7,300 students since the 2017/18 winter semester.
