The Rhine-Kleve shipping route consists of the Spoy Canal and the lower part of the Griethauser Altrhein. The Spoy Canal begins as a federal waterway at the port of Kleve at km 1.78 and flows into the Griethauser Altrhein in the underwater of the Brienen lock at km 4.57. This joins the Rhine on the left bank of the Rhine at km 10.24 at km 863.93, just before the German-Dutch border. The 570 m long upper part of the Griethauser Altrhein as a so-called other federal inland waterway also belongs to the SRK.

history

Brienen lock in the Spoy Canal

At the beginning of the 15th century the city of Kleve was looking for direct access to the Rhine . To this end, it expanded the Spoygraben receiving water into a 4 km long shipping canal . In 1658 the now dilapidated canal was restored and made accessible with a lock at Brienen . In 1809 the canal and the lock were destroyed by a mighty flood with ice .

The waterway was indispensable for transporting grain from the Kleve area and bringing coal from the Ruhr area . After a few makeshift measures, Prussia took over the expansion of the canal and lock for a 300 t ship from 1843–1846.

1907-1910, the waterway was adapted to the increased ship sizes by expanding the Spoy Canal to 3 m depth and 10.5 m floor width, by building a new lock next to the old one for the 600 t ship with 67 m usable length and 8.6 m width and by dredging the Rhine, which has now become the Old Rhine.

In the pumping station built in 1927 , the lock chamber was used as a feed line from 1843. In 1933 the lock was given higher chamber walls and new gates in connection with the construction of dykes , so that from then on 1000 t ships can use the canal up to the highest water level on the Rhine. Today the channel depth is 2.5 m, on the Griethauser Altrhein it corresponds to the respective water level of the Rhine at the Emmerich gauge plus 0.30 m. However, due to the progressive erosion of the Rhine bed , the ships can only approach Klever Hafen with partial loads for months. It is therefore doubtful whether the waterway will remain usable for commercial shipping.
