Brienen is a district of the city of Kleve . The district on the Spoy Canal and the Old Rhine has 375 inhabitants on an area of 214 hectares. The Spoy Canal connects Klever Hafen with the Rhine.
A church in Brienen mentioned in 1280 was washed away during the Rhine flood in 1809. This event was processed in Goethe's ballad about Johanna Sebus . In the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, Brienen was part of the Kleverhamm office .
The sights of Brienen include the listed Spoyschleuse, the marina on the Old Rhine, the Brienensche Hof and the Brienen war memorial .
In the nearby Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's location, the battle in the Reichswald took place in the spring of 1945 . In this battle for the Lower Rhine, the place was badly affected.
On July 1, 1969, Brienen was incorporated into Kleve.
