history

Catholic Church of St. Martinus

When he took office in 1347, Count Johann von Kleve was granted the privilege of Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian to move the Nijmegen customs to any place in the Klevian territory . At the latest in 1357 the relocation to Griethausen took place, where previously there was only one estate. 1364 work for creating a town in the are Zollburg detected, the 1373/74 municipal rights received. Griethausen was one of the later 24 cities of the Duchy of Kleve . When the Rhine was relocated , the Griethauser Zoll lost its importance again at the beginning of the 15th century. Griethausen was destroyed by the battles over Schenkenschanz in the 17th century.

A St. Johannes monastery was founded in 1447 and existed until 1802; from 1514 sisters of the third rule "tertiae regulae" ( Third Order ) lived there .

From 1794/98 (mairie in the Napoleonic department de la Roer ) and 1816 after the return to the Kingdom of Prussia until 1969 there was a mayor's office or an office in Griethausen, which also included Brienen , Kellen , Salmorth and Middelward, Warbeyen with Hurendeich and Wardhausen (1945) belonged.

In the nearby Klever Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town, the so-called battle in the Reichswald took place at the end of the Second World War in February 1945 .

On July 1, 1969, Griethausen was incorporated into Kleve by the law to reorganize the district .

Attractions

The Catholic Church of St. Martinus is originally a single-nave late Gothic brick building from the late 14th century, to which a north aisle was added in 1433; the tower was also added at this time. During a neo-Gothic renovation in 1850, the church was also given a south aisle. The Gothic, twelve-meter-high sandstone sacrament house from 1490 is worth seeing.

Striking is the old railway bridge that was once a rail link from Cologne via Neuss and Kleve on the Dutch North Sea - ports produced (see also railway Zevenaar Cleves ).
