Materborn is a North Rhine-Westphalian village located in the urban area of Kleve on the Lower Rhine , with 10,959 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) on an area of ​​1,885 hectares, which forms the second largest district after Kleve itself. The center of Materborn is 2 km southwest of the center of Klever.

History and culture

In February 1945, the so-called Battle of the Reichswald took place in nearby Klever Reichswald . The largest war graveyard of the Commonwealth in Germany, the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, is located there today .

After the end of the war, the left Lower Rhine was a British zone of occupation .

On July 1, 1969, Materborn was incorporated into Kleve. Before that there was an office in Materborn from 1794 to 1945 .

In the center of Materborn is the old St. Anna Church; its steeple was destroyed during the Second World War. Fairs continued to take place there until 1966; from then on in the new St. Anna Church completed in 1966. The latter has now been torn down again, and in its place (as of December 2017), Lebenshilfe Kleverland had a residential park built. The old church (meanwhile renovated) has been used for church services again since the end of 2008.

Near the old church is Ranzow Castle , which is now used as a senior citizens' home and was first mentioned in 1663 ; their gardens are open to the public. There is a WDR transmission mast on Klever Berg in Materborn .

Facilities for children and young people

The SOS Children's Village Niederrhein, opened in 1969, and a youth hostel run by the DJH (with a high ropes course) are located in Materborn .

In Materborn there is a separate tribe of the German Scout Association Saint Georg (DPSG).

Materborn has a denominational primary school (St. Marien primary school). The community secondary school (St. Anna Community Secondary School) has been closed. The Catholic youth center "Das Theo", located right next to it, is the meeting point for young people from Materborn and other parts of the city.

Clubs and events

The Materborn fair is held in the summer months . There is a football club called SV Siegfried Materborn 1927 e. V. , a scout tribe , a marching band , the association of Heimatfreunde Materborn e. V. and numerous other associations.
