cath. St. Hermes Church

Warbeyen is a district of the city of Kleve in the Kleve district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The place has about 760 inhabitants.

history

Warbeyen was first mentioned in 965 on the occasion of a donation to the St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne , and in 1290 the church of St. Hermes was first mentioned as a chapel; it originally belonged to the parish of Huisberden and received parish rights in the course of the 14th century - at least before 1389. Since Warbeyen was originally located on the right bank of the Rhine and only fell to the left bank when the Rhine was shifted in the late Middle Ages, the church remained part of the diocese of Utrecht for a long time . A neo-Gothic tower and a baptistery were added to the late Gothic nave in 1899. Most of the neo-Gothic furnishings were removed after the Second World War.

From 1319 the Warbeyen court was attested as being in the possession of the Counts of Kleve . Since the late Middle Ages, the place belonged to the Kleverhamm office , from the French times to the (Mairie) mayor's office of Griethausen (again office from 1928).

The Emmerich bridge over the Rhine is located near Warbeyen .

In the nearby Reichswald and in the vicinity of today's town, the so-called battle in the Reichswald raged in the spring of 1945 . In this battle for the Lower Rhine, the place was badly affected.

On July 1, 1969, Warbeyen was incorporated into Kleve.
