Rozhysche (Ukrainian and Russian Рожище Russian transcribed Roschischtsche ; Polish Rozyszcze ) is a small Ukrainian town with a little over 13,000 inhabitants. It lies on the River Styx in the Oblast Volyn region , southeast of the city of Kovel and few kilometers from the district capital of Lutsk .
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1377, over the centuries a multiethnic place developed, and the Wolhynian Germans also played their part. Between 1920 and 1939 Roschyschtsche belonged to Poland . As a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , the Soviet Union occupied the area, after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the place was under German rule until 1944, came back to the Soviet Union after the Second World War and was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR . On August 31, 1989, it was granted city status, and since 1991 it has belonged to today's Ukraine.
