history
The place was first mentioned in writing as Lukowo in 1537 , was granted Magdeburg city charter in 1557 and was named Maciejów after the landowner . Until 1795 it was part of the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania in the Ruthenia / Chełmer Land voivodeship . Then it came to the newly founded Volhynia Governorate as part of the Russian Empire . After the end of the First World War, the place became part of the Second Polish Republic ( Volyn Voivodeship , Powiat Kowel, Gmina Maciejów). As a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact , the Soviet Union occupied the area. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the place was under German rule until 1944. During this time, the Jewish population was murdered and the synagogue from 1781 was destroyed. After the Second World War , Lukiw (Mazejiw / Mazejew) came back to the Soviet Union and was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR . Since 1940 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement, in 1991 the settlement was part of the newly formed Ukraine.
Until 1946 the place had the Russian name Mazejew (Мацеев) or Ukrainian Mazejiw (Мацеїв), then it was renamed Lukow / Lukiw based on the original name.
