Novovolynsk (Ukrainian Нововолинськ ; Russian Нововолынск ) is a city in northwestern Ukraine in Volyn Oblast near the border with Poland .

The urban-type settlement Blahodatne also belongs to the municipality , the city lies in the east of the Rajons area of Ivanytschi , but is not part of it itself.

history

Founded in the early 1950s as a workers' town for the coal mining that also started there , this has always been the focus of urban development. Between 1957 and 1962 the place was the seat of the district administration of the eponymous Novovolynsk district , which emerged from the Ivanytschi district. In 1957 the city received its current city status.

The end of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the subsequent economic collapse ushered in a period of stagnation. Many residents have moved to big cities or abroad to earn money there.

economy

Although several mines have been shut down, the coal mines are still an important economic factor.

traffic

The only public means of transport are buses that connect Novovolynsk with nearby cities such as Lutsk , Kovel or Lemberg (Lviv). The existing railway tracks are only used for freight traffic. There is a border crossing (Zosin / Ustyluh) to Poland near the city.
