The war memorial in Brienen

The war memorial is in the Brienen part of the city of Kleve . Plaques on the memorial commemorate the soldiers who fell and went missing in the First and Second World Wars .

history

The war memorial built by the municipality of Brienen and the shooting club was inaugurated on September 3rd and 4th, 1922 by Mr. Thiel from the Brien shooting club. Construction began - with the permission of the Belgian occupation authorities - on February 6, 1922. The contractors were the municipality and the Brienen rifle club. Most of the money was raised by the shooting club, but donations and an entrance fee of ten marks at the inauguration were also decisive for the financing.

The monument has been in the same location since construction began and its condition has not been changed. Only the stone tablet was replaced by a marble tablet after the Second World War and now also contains the fallen and missing of the Second World War.

Reclassifications of the memorial plaques

The original stone tablet was replaced by a marble tablet, which also changed the dedication:

Stone tablet: "Blessed are the heroes of Brienen"
Marble plaque: "Remember the heroes of Brienen"
