Edwin Brienen (born June 15, 1971 in Alkmaar ) is a Dutch film director , actor , film producer , journalist and radio host . He is an exponent of auteur cinema and always writes the scripts for his films himself. He is known in the Netherlands for his radio shows for VPRO on 3FM in the 1990s. In Germany he was often referred to as 'the Dutch cooper ', not only because of his film style, but also because of his productivity. He lived in Manhattan , New York City from 2000 to 2002 . He has lived in Berlin since 2003 . Brienen hardly gives interviews and doesn't talk about his private life . To date (2012) Brienen has made 14 feature films.

Life

As a child, Brienen was already involved in the radio and television world. He sang in the children's television choir Kinderen voor Kinderen and moderated various radio programs. After graduating from high school in 1989, Brienen studied philosophy and psychology at the universities of Utrecht and Rotterdam . Growing up with a religious mother in the red light district in Amsterdam, Brienen's youth was a bizarre mixture of religious dogmatics and explicit liberalism .

In 1993 the national radio and television station VPRO got him . For six years Brienen hosted the weekly shows De Moordlijst (alternative album charts) and Koud Zweet (magazine) at prime time on 3FM . His shows caused a stir nationwide, particularly a staged suicide during a live broadcast. Brienen was the initiator of the X-Rated Porn Extravaganzas , groundbreaking multimedia spectacles in the Amsterdam club scene , which combined the representation of art and pornography on stage. Brienen became known to the masses in 1996 with the television show Ultra Vista! that quickly became a cult program. In the 1990s he wrote articles for the music magazines Opscene and OOR. During a two and a half year hiatus at VPRO, he directed high-profile TV shows for Yorin , such as Buch, Burger & Buitenlui and Hoe Hoort het Eigenlijk? with Theo van Gogh .

Film career

Beginning

In 2000 Brienen wrote, directed and produced his debut film Terrorama! - A dark story about a group of jaded artists who seek psychological freedom in an act of violence. The film made headlines long before it was released when the newspapers wrote about sexual excess and serious substance abuse . A year later, Brienen returned to VPRO and in September produced a report on the New York underground scene. There he witnessed the attack on the World Trade Center . Because of the attack, he had to attend the New York premiere of Terrorama! cancel.

Brienen's last Dutch-language film, Both Ends Burning , was born in 2004. At that time the director was already living in Berlin. His first four films were shown at a Brienen festival in numerous Dutch cinemas and theaters. Due to the murder of Theo van Gogh , a new version of Terrorama! published, in which he embodied a Quran preacher. In spring 2005 Brienen produced the short film Das absolut Böse , where he made his first experiment with choreography. At the same time, the culture broadcaster ARTE broadcast a TV special about Brienen and his debut film Terrorama! which the station compared to Kubrick ’s Clockwork Orange .

Berlin films

In the winter of 2005 Brienens first German-language film with the title Why Ulli wanted to kill himself on Christmas Eve came to the cinema. This film may well deserve to be called the 'fastest shot film'. Accompanied by a group of artists, the hard-working director had come up with the wild plan to produce, film and cut a full feature film in one month for theatrical release. In December 2005 the film was shown in various German cinemas and received positive reviews. Brienen's fight with the Dutch film festival (which Terrorama refused in 2001) was settled and Last Performance was allowed to premiere at the festival in 2006. The film is set in the New York theater scene. In 2008 Brienen worked with the Austrian actor Erwin Leder . Leder, known from Das Boot and Underworld , met Edwin while shooting the German film Chien Fuck , in which both played a role. In L'amour toujours , Leder plays Pygor, an obsessed director who bears a striking resemblance to the real-life director.

At the end of 2009 Brienen produced Revision - Apocalypse II , in which Eva Dorrepaal plays the lead role. The film plays with topics like fear , government control and the new world order. Then Brienen decided to make two German-language films again, first Viva Europa! which takes place on November 9th, 2009, exactly 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall . The film is a subversive fairy tale about the consequences of a united Europe. The premiere was on November 8, 2009 at the Volksbühne in Berlin . The film Lena finally wants to know , made in 2011 , is a melancholy, 70s- style comedy and can be regarded as Brienen's most commercial film to date.

At the beginning of 2012, Brienen's 14th feature film Exploitation is expected in the cinema.

Music videos

Brienen occasionally directs music videos. He worked several times with Joachim Witt and the British duo Noblesse Oblige . His video for Rummelsnuff's "Nathalie", with actress Laura Tonke in the lead role, was voted video of the month in Spex (magazine) .

radio

Brienen was a presenter for the Dutch broadcaster VPRO between 1992 and 2004 (with a short break in 1999/2000). In 2007 he did several shows for the Internet broadcaster Cybernetic Broadcasting System. Brienen has been producing German-language radio plays for the WDR radio program since 2011 . His radio play "When Satan Learned To Walk" was broadcast at the end of October 2011.
