history

The origins go back to the Netherlands School of Commerce ( Nederlandse Handels-Hoogeschool ; NHH), which was founded in 1913 on a private initiative of the commercial community of Rotterdam. The official recognition of trade and economics as academic disciplines led to a name change in 1939: the NHH became the Netherlands School of Economics ( Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool ; NEH). The increasing complexity of Dutch society resulted in the arrival of new faculties - law and social sciences - in the 1960s, which were followed by other faculties in philosophy, history and art, and business administration in the 1970s and 1980s.

At the same time, the Foundation for Higher Clinical Education tried to establish a full medical course in Rotterdam since 1950 . These efforts resulted in the government establishing the Rotterdam Medical Faculty in 1966 and relocating it to the Dijkzigt Hospital. Together with the Sophia Children's Hospital and the Daniel den Hoed Clinic, this formed the University Hospital Rotterdam, which has been named Erasmus MC since January 1, 2003 .

In 1973 the Medical Faculty Rotterdam and the Netherlands School of Economics merged to form the Erasmus University Rotterdam, named after the Dutch humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus , who lived in Rotterdam in the 15th century. Finally, in 2009 the International Institute of Social Sciences, an internationally renowned institute in the field of development research and international cooperation, became part of the Erasmus University.
