Melanie Henriëtte Schultz van Haegen-Maas Geesteranus (born June 28, 1970 in Laag-Soeren ) is a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD). From 2010 to 2017 she was Minister for Infrastructure and the Environment , in Cabinet Rutte I and Cabinet Rutte II .

From 2002 to 2007 she was State Secretary for Transport and Water Management in the Balkenende I , II and III cabinets .

She studied administrative science at the University of Leiden and the Erasmus University Rotterdam . She was an alderman in Leiden for a few years .

Melanie Schultz van Haegen is married, has two children and is interested in art history . In 2007 she received the Knight's Cross from the Order of Orange-Nassau .
