Marianne Thieme

Marianne Louise Thieme (born March 6, 1972 in Ede , Gelderland Province ) is a Dutch animal rights activist , publicist and politician . She is the leading force of the Partij voor de Dieren , which she represented in the House of Commons in the Netherlands until October 9, 2019, and an author on animal welfare issues.

Thieme attended college in Doorwerth and then studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Erasmus University Rotterdam Law with a focus on administrative law , with a special interest to the rights of the animals was. During this time she also became a vegetarian .

Career

After completing her studies, she worked from 1998 to 2001 in a research institute of the B&A group in The Hague . From 2001 to 2004 she worked for the Bond voor Dieren Foundation (Association for Animals). In October 2002 she founded the Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD) together with other animal rights activists . From June 2003 to November 2010 she served as party leader.

In the parliamentary elections of 2003 she was for the first time the top candidate of the PvdD; the party received only 47,754 votes (0.5 percent) and no mandate. In the parliamentary elections of 2006 it made the leap into the Dutch lower house for the first time with 1.8 percent of the vote and has since been represented there with at least two seats. In the 2004 and 2009 European elections, the party narrowly failed, even though it was able to achieve more than three percent of the vote. Since the election in May 2014 , she has also been represented there by one MP.

From 2004 to 2006, Thieme was director of the Wakker Dier Foundation , an animal welfare organization that is primarily active in the bio- industry.

Marianne Thieme lives in Maarssen near Utrecht , is separated and has two daughters.
