Fontys is a large public university with more than 44,000 students in multiple locations in the Netherlands. The three largest Fontys campuses are located in the cities of Eindhoven , Tilburg and Venlo . The name Fontys comes from the Latin word "fons" (in German: "source"). Fontys would like to emphasize that the university is a source of knowledge for students. Fontys offers a total of 200 Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the fields of business, technology, health, social work, sports and teacher training. Many programs are offered in English and German (especially on the International Campus in Venlo). The independent Dutch university ranking Keuzegids ranks Fontys as one of the best large universities in the Netherlands. In 2014 Nienke Meijer (chairwoman of the Fontys since 2013) was declared the “Most Influential Woman in the Netherlands”. Her successor has been Joep Houterman since 2020.

Ranking

According to the independent Dutch university ranking Keuzegids, Fontys is one of the best universities in the Netherlands. Above-average results are achieved in particular in the fields of technology, IT, logistics and business administration and management (consisting of the courses in International Business (IB), Marketing Management (MM), International Finance & Control (IFC) and International Fresh Business Management (IFBM)).

International Campus Venlo

Fontys Venlo is a young campus with a long history. First of all, the so-called Venlo University of Applied Sciences was founded on the site of the former De Wylderbeek estate (whose forest still contains protected artefacts from Roman times). At the end of the 1990s, the university then joined the growing Fontys university network. Several renovations and expansions contributed to the fact that today's university campus in Venlo ("which was originally built in 1965 by a community of nuns") is still state-of-the-art. Today the campus houses three institutes: Fontys Hogeschool Kind en Educatie (education of primary school teachers), Fontys Hogeschool Techniek en Logistiek (studies in engineering and logistics) and Fontys International Business School (economics studies).

Although the city center of Venlo had to be rebuilt after the Second World War, buildings from the 14th century make up an essential part of the city center of Venlo . Ald Weishoes (old orphanage), Romerhoes (Roman house), Stadhuis (town hall) and the St. Martinuskerk (St. Martin's Church) are just a few of the many historical buildings in downtown Venlo. Together with The Hague , Venlo was awarded the “Beste binnenstad” award (best city center in the Netherlands) between 2013 and 2015.

Both the close proximity to the Maas (one of the three major rivers in the Netherlands) and Germany make Venlo one of the most important logistics hotspots in Europe. The city can be reached by six nearby airports: Eindhoven Airport , Maastricht Aachen Airport , Dusseldorf Airport , Niederrhein Airport , Cologne / Bonn Airport and Dortmund Airport . Venlo's international orientation and distinct entrepreneurial spirit are represented by students from over 50 countries on the Fontys International Campus in Venlo.

Semester abroad

Fontys has over 100 partner universities worldwide, including in Australia , China , England , Finland , Hong Kong , Italy , Canada , Mexico , Zambia , USA and Vietnam (to name a few). In the third year of study, Fontys students have the opportunity to study abroad for one semester at one of the named partner universities. Alternatively, students can stay at Fontys for the semester and choose one of the numerous specializations such as B. International Business Management, Trendwatching, Game Business or Event Management.

Start-up Factory / Software Factory

In the second year of study, all students in a business degree set up a so-called start-up factory - a student company consisting of around 10 students and two consultants, which is entered in the Dutch commercial register. The students run this company for almost a year: shares are distributed to generate start-up capital, a business plan is written, a product / service is developed and sold. All positions such as managing director, marketing manager or finance manager in the company are distributed among each other. At the end of the academic year, the company is properly dissolved. In recent years, several Fontys student companies have taken part in national and international competitions and have been recognized for their successful business model. Students who have chosen to study engineering take part in the Software Factory, where they develop tailor-made software solutions for companies.

Internships

During their studies, all students complete two internships (one semester each in the third and fourth year of study). The aim of both internships is to build up a professional network and to gain work experience that should facilitate the job search after graduation. Internships can be done in the Netherlands or abroad. The students choose the company to which they apply. Fontys also offers a list of regional and international partner companies. During both internships, the students work on a company project. They are each supervised by a lecturer and an employee of the company.

Fontys maintains partnerships with over 500 international companies including 3M , Adidas , Bayer , BMW , Coca-Cola , Daimler AG , Deloitte , Ernst & Young , Henkel , IKEA , KPMG , L'Oréal , Metro AG , Nike , Philips , Porsche , Robert Bosch GmbH , Siemens , Sony , Vodafone and Volkswagen . Fontys students either work on company projects or do an internship at these companies.
